Duke to Unveil Jim Sabiston Fieldhouse
- In conjunction with Duke's home opener, the Blue Devils will unveil not only their new blue turf, but also the Jim Sabiston Fieldhouse. The already existing building received a complete facelift inside and an additional 1,088 square feet was added onto the back. The addition houses the Blue Devils' new locker room, which features custom lockers and plenty of space for team bonding through the locker room experience.
- The project was made possible through the generosity of Duke field hockey supporters and with a lead donation from Susan and Jim Sabiston. The official ribbon cutting will take place Sept. 11.
The Opening Hit
- Duke makes its home debut this weekend against Appalachian State and William & Mary. The Blue Devils climbed to No. 16 in the latest NFHCA poll following its wins over ranked Rutgers and Saint Joseph's squads. Duke is 2-2 overall with both setbacks coming to top-five opponents.
- The Blue Devils have already played two overtime games this season, going to penalty strokes against Rutgers and double overtime with Saint Joseph's.
- Piper Hampsch was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week and the NFHCA National Defensive Player of the Week following her season-opening performances in New Jersey. She finished the first weekend with 11 saves and also had three stops in the penalty stroke shootout against Rutgers.
- All four of Duke's goals this season have come off the sticks of different players. Issy Carey and Hannah Miller lead the way with a goal and an assist to their names.
- This weekend's games are two of just six home contests in 2022. The Blue Devils return home again Sept. 23 and 25, hosting Boston College and James Madison.

Scouting App State
- Appalachian State comes to Durham sporting a 3-1 record after falling to Drexel in a penalty stroke shootout last Sunday. After starting the season with a pair of lopsided victories, the Mountaineers have gone into extra periods in the past two outings. App State has outscored its opponents 11-3 in the four contests.
- Friederike Stegen leads all Mountaineers with four goals, while Pauline Mangold has three tallies and an assist for seven points. Carli Ciocco is the creator, dishing five assists. Stegen and Mangold both garnered all-conference nods in 2021. Defensively, Addie Clark is back in the cage for the Mountaineers after placing third in the MAC with a .719 save percentage. Clark is averaging five saves per game and sports a 0.36 goals against average to lead the MAC and rank fifth nationally. Her .909 save percentage is the third best in the country.

Scouting William & Mary
- William and Mary is off to a great start in 2022, posting top-25 wins over No. 19 Old Dominion and No. 6 Liberty to climb to No. 21 in the national poll. The Tribe edged the Monarchs, 3-2, in double overtime and defeated the Flames, 1-0, in overtime. All three of the Tribe's wins have come in overtime. Their lone loss was at the hands of Richmond, 3-1.
- Lauren Curran and Sally Snead have two goals apiece to lead the offense, while Maddie George anchors the defense in goal with a .861 save percentage and a 1.12 goals against average. Tribe defender Tabby Billingham and midfielder Pyper Friedman both were named to the preseason All-CAA team and William & Mary was voted to finish fourth in the CAA.

Series Histories
- Duke and Appalachian State are playing for the 37th time overall. The Blue Devils hold a commanding 30-3-3 lead in the series and have won every game since a tie in 1981. The two teams last played in 2018 with the Blue Devils dominating 8-0. Friday's game is just the third matchup in the past 10 years.
- Duke and William & Mary continue their rivalry, squaring off for the ninth straight season. The Blue Devils are 29-8-1 overall versus the Tribe. Duke has won 19 straight against the Tribe with the last loss coming in 2001. Duke defeated William & Mary 3-1 last season.

Duke has a depth of talent offensively with multiple players capable of finding the back of the cage. Four different Blue Devils have scored this season with Issy Carey and Hannah Miller leading the way with three points apiece.
- The Blue Devils have been dangerous in the circle, earning 26 penalty corners. Duke leads the ACC with 6.5 penalty corners per game and continues to work toward capitalizing on those scoring opportunities.
- Defensively, the Blue Devils have an entirely new backline and will be bolstered by the experience of graduate student Raphaelle van de Walle from the Netherlands. Senior Mary Harkins and sophomores Shelby Bumgarner and Megan Maransky will look to build off their experiences this past spring in starting roles this year. In goal, Piper Hampsch leads the ACC with a 7.0 saves per game average. She is third in the conference with a .737 save percentage.
