DURHAM β William & Mary scored a pair of third-quarter goals to edge 16th-ranked Duke, 2-1, in non-conference field hockey action on Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium Sunday afternoon.
The 21st-ranked Tribe improves to 5-1 overall, while the Blue Devils move to 3-3 on the year. All three of Duke's setbacks have come against top-25 opponents, while William & Mary has three top-25 victories.
How it Happened
- Duke opened scoring in the 10th minute as sophomore forward Logan Clouser forced a Tribe defender into a mistake. Clouser took the ball off the Tribe defender's stick and beat William & Mary goalkeeper Maddie George one-on-one for her first goal of the season.
- Much of the first half of action was played between the circles with neither team creating many scoring opportunities. Duke led in shots, 4-2, after 30 minutes of play, while William & Mary had the 3-2 edge in penalty corners.
- The Blue Devils were solid defensively in the first two quarter, keeping the Tribe to two shots and only one on goal.
- Duke came out on the front foot in the first few minutes of the third quarter, controlling possession and earning a penalty corner.
- Momentum shifted in William & Mary's favor in the 36th minute as the Tribe did well to defend a Duke penalty corner. After blocking a shot from the Blue Devils, William & Mary sent an outlet pass to start the counterattack. With numbers up, the Tribe found Lauren Curran who dribbled into the circle and was able to beat Duke goalie Piper Hampsch one-on-one for the equalizer.
- Eight minutes later, William & Mary capitalized on a penalty corner to nab the 2-1 lead. Allison Goodwin scored the goal, sneaking a shot past the near post. Tabby Billingham and Pyper Friedman had the assists.
- Duke pressed on offense in the fourth quarter and nearly tied the score with just over two minutes remaining as Kira Curland deflected the ball into the cage. Upon a video review, the goal was disallowed, leaving Duke still trailing. The Blue Devils outshot the Tribe, 8-0 in the final period, but couldn't find the back of the cage.
- Overall, Duke held a 17-6 advantage in shots and a 6-5 lead in penalty corners. Hampsch finished with two saves in 56 minutes of action, while George had five stops for the Tribe.
Notes
- Clouser's goal marks the sixth different Blue Devil goal scorer this season.
- This weekend was the debut for the Blue Devils' new blue turf and the ribbon cutting and opening of the new Jim Sabiston Fieldhouse.
- Hampsch pushes her career saves total to 192, leaving her eight shy of becoming the 10th goalie in Duke history to record 200 career saves.
Quotes
Bustin's overall impressions of the game
"Congratulations to William & Mary. They are off to a great start this season. They're a solid team, a great team and we knew that coming in, but we also created incredible opportunities and had tons of circle entries. The frustration builds that it's been a couple games now where we haven't capitalized on those circle entries and those opportunities. You have to score to win. That part is something we're absolutely just going to continue to work on, overcome and figure it out."

Bustin on Duke's scoring struggles
"Honestly, I don't know how much we're alert and analyzing and reading the game when we're out there playing. I think there was a lot of eyes on the ball and not trying to be strategic and capitalizing on opportunities. We have to be mindful is the word, mindful when you play as to what you have to do to get the advantage. You have to be able to do that at this level."
Bustin on the third quarter
"I think it just caught up to us. Not being mindful β¦we turned the ball over. On set pieces we didn't execute very simple skills. I don't know what attributes to that because they are all very talented field hockey players and so we just have to work on where they are mentally when these great opportunities come."
Playing at home this weekend for the first time
"It's been an incredible weekend. The weekend of opening up this turf, the weekend of the ribbon cutting for the Jim Sabiston Fieldhouse and having Susan Sabiston and her daughter Kristen here and all the alums who came back as well as all the parents who supported us β in that regard it was an incredible special weekend. It was a fantastic feeling given to the kids and the program."
