DURHAM – Tenth-ranked Syracuse scored two goals in the first quarter en route to a 5-1 victory over the 18th-ranked Blue Devils in the ACC field hockey opener for both teams Friday evening at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
Syracuse improves to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in conference action, while Duke drops to 3-4 and 0-1.
How it Happened
- Syracuse, the nation's second-ranked scoring offense, got off to a fast start as leading scorer Charlotte de Vries notched her seventh goal of the season on a fifth-minute penalty corner.
- Less than seven minutes later, it was Joy Haarman taking advantage of a fast restart, firing a shot from just inside the circle high into the cage for the 2-0 advantage.
- Sophomore Josephine Palde notched her second goal of the season, tapping in a bouncing ball. Senior Hannah Miller sent the pass in that bounced around and eventually fell to Palde on the far post.
- De Vries tacked on a second goal before halftime to make it 3-0 and Syracuse added two more in the third quarter for the 5-1 victory.
- The Blue Devils did well to create chances inside the scoring circle, earning seven penalty corners. Duke finished the evening with seven shots, while Syracuse had nine. The Orange also had seven penalty corners.
- In goal, Piper Hampsch made two saves in 45 minutes of action, while graduate student Grace Brightbill came off the bench to make three stops.
