DURHAM – Entering the 52nd season in program history, the Duke volleyball team will open the 2022 campaign this weekend at the doTERRA Classic in Provo, Utah.
The Blue Devils will face Washington State at 12 p.m., on Friday before a 9 p.m., contest against the host No. 10 Cougars. Duke will close out its opening weekend against Rider on Saturday at 6 p.m. Fans can access the matches via BYUtv for free.
LAST TIME OUT
- The Blue Devils concluded the 2021 season with a 16-13 overall record and went 7-11 in conference play. Entering her 24th season at the helm of the program, head coach Jolene Nagel returns nine letterwinners from this past season's squad in addition to eight newcomers. During her Duke tenure, Nagel has led the Blue Devils to 13 NCAA Tournament appearances and 14 seasons with 20 or more victories.
- Duke welcomed Davidson Saturday, Aug. 20 for an exhibition match as the Blue Devils secured a 3-1 win. Senior co-captain Gracie Johnson led the team offensively with 11 kills while graduate student setter Devon Chang made her Blue Devil debut and dished 26 assists in two sets. Defensively, graduate student libero Madison Bryant paced Duke with 22 digs and added two aces.
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE SERIES
- WASHINGTON STATE: Friday marks the first meeting between Duke and Washington State.
- BYU: BYU leads the all-time series 4-0. The two teams last met in 2018 for two matches in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
- RIDER: Saturday marks the first meeting between Duke and Washington State.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
- WASHINGTON STATE: Washington State finished the 2021 slate 20-12 overall, including a run in the NCAA Tournament to the second round. The Cougs have made the tournament in six-consecutive seasons and this season feature a pair of AVCA All-American honorees from last year in middle blocker Magda Jehlarova and outside hitter Pia Timmer. Sophomore rightside Katy Ryan, a 2021 Pac-12 All-Freshman selection, also returns after averaging 2.18 kills/set at a .326 clip as a true freshman in 2021.
- BYU: BYU enters the 2022 slate at No. 10 in the nation after coming off a 30-2 season that featured a perfect 18-0 in conference en route to its second-straight West Coast Conference title and the sixth in seven seasons under head coach Heather Olmstead. The Cougars made Sweet 16 runs in the NCAA Tournament the last two seasons and return All-American setter Whitney Bower, as well as middle blocker Heather Gneiting, outside hitter Erin Livingston and rightside Kate Grimmer.
- RIDER: Rider finished the 2021 season 19-12 overall and 14-4 in the MAAC and return of two top hitters in Morgan Romano (510 kills) and Tori Schrader (281 kills). The Broncs are without standout setter Anilee Sher, who accumulated 1,209 assists for the season.
JOHNSON LOOKS TO LEAD
- Duke enters the 2022 season featuring a roster of 18 as nearly half are newcomers. With the departure of several key offensive and defensive threats from a season ago, the Blue Devils look to fill a couple of holes.
- Six rotation outside hitter Gracie Johnson spearheads the Blue Devil offensive contingent. She started all 29 matches, finished second on the team with 239 kills and a 2.37 kills/set average and led the team and the ACC with 46 aces. Johnson ranked second on the team behind the libero with 254 digs as an important defensive player and added 35 total blocks at the net.
UP NEXT
Duke will open its 2022 home slate with the Duke Invitational Sept. 2-3 in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils will welcome East Carolina, ETSU and Northeastern.
