EUGENE, Ore. – Graduate students
Lauren Hoffman and
Erin Marsh earned bronze medals and garnered All-America First Team honors in the 400m hurdles and heptathlon, respectively, as the No. 16 Duke women's track and field team wrapped up a historic season with the final day of competition at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
"Both teams gained valuable experience competing at this meet," said Director of Track & Field and Cross Country
Shawn Wilbourn. "Some of the best athletes in the world lined up this week and we held our own. It can be humbling but this is the level we are striving for."
With the third-place finishes, the pair posted the highest placements of their careers at the national outdoor meet.
Hoffman finished off an outstanding season, one that saw her reset her own school record four times, with another stellar performance. The Haymarket, Va., native improved upon her 10th-place finish from a year ago, clocking 55.58 to finish third overall.
After finishing fourth in the heptathlon at the 2021 Outdoor Championships and taking home the best finish by a Blue Devil since 2014, Marsh raised the bar once again. The Buford, Ga., product upended her previous best placement as she totaled 5,929 points to place third overall. Marsh delivered a seasons-best performance in the final event of the day, producing a brilliant run of 2:14.64 to finish third in the 800m.
Marsh opened the morning with the long jump and tallied a jump of 5.74m (18-10 feet) on her opening attempt. In the javelin competition that followed, Marsh registered her best throw on the second attempt as she threw the javelin 35.75m (117-3 feet) to add 586 points to her total.
Duke's women collected 12 team points to finished tied for 21st overall, closing the door on a historic 2021-22 campaign. This season saw the Blue Devils earn their highest ranking in program history of No. 12, set three school records and notch 23 top-five program marks overall.
