DURHAM – Duke freshman
Alex Mooney was named to the 2022 ACC All-Freshman Team, the organization announced Monday morning.
Â
Mooney, a native of Rochester Hills, Mich., was Duke's everyday shortstop on the diamond, starting all 54 games on the season. Overall, he concluded his rookie campaign hitting .292 to match junior
Graham Pauley to lead the team. Mooney led the team with 45 runs scored, primarily hitting in the leadoff spot this season. In addition, he added 10 doubles, a triple, three home runs and 30 RBIs. Mooney also tallied 12 stolen bases on the season, tying graduate student
Wil Hoyle to lead the team.
Â
"I could not be more proud of
Alex Mooney and the job he has done this year," Duke head coach
Chris Pollard said. "Since arriving on campus last July, his work ethic, selflessness and mental toughness has been off the charts for a freshman. To play shortstop and bat leadoff every day in this league you have to be talented, but you also have to be really tough. He is both. I am excited to see him compete in the Cape this summer and I am pumped to see him build off this year as he moves forward in our program. The sky is the limit for
Alex Mooney."Â
Mooney put together a terrific second half of the season. After holding a batting average of .226 on April 8, Mooney went on a tear and slash .372/.478/.457 in the program's final 23 games of the season, including a team-long 16-game hitting streak. In that stretch, Mooney led the team in batting average and on-base percentage. In addition, he earned 15 walks and four hit by pitches compared to 16 strikeouts.
Â
Although in the leadoff spot in the lineup, Mooney led the team in batting average with bases loaded, finishing the season an impressive 6-of-10. In addition, he ranked fourth on the team in multi-hit games (14) and led the team with two four-knock games.
Â
Mooney becomes the fifth Blue Devil to be named to the All-Freshman Team, joining
Ethan Murray in 2019,
Joey Loperfido in 2018 and
Jimmy Herron and
Zack Kone in 2016.
