DURHAM – Duke track and field has qualified 30 athletes to compete in the NCAA East Regional meet, as the NCAA announced the field for the East Preliminary round Thursday afternoon. The four-day meet, hosted by Indiana University, will take place in Bloomington, Ind., from May 25-28 at the Haugh Track & Field Complex.
The regional features qualifiers with the top-48 marks in the nation (following injury or withdrawal), with the only exception being the top-24 times for relays and direct qualification for the top-24 in multi-events (heptathlon and decathlon). The top-24 from each event across the two regionals will advance to NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore.
Graduate student
Erin Marsh and senior
Isabel Wakefield earned automatic qualification to the NCAA Outdoor Championships as each notched top-24 national marks in the heptathlon. Marsh owns the third-highest point total of 5,946 points, improving her own school record by 22 points on the way to earning the gold medal at the ACC Outdoor Championships this past weekend. She'll look to improve on her runner-up finish in the pentathlon at the NCAA Indoor Championships as well as her fourth-place finish at last season's NCAA Outdoor Championships. Wakefield checks in at No. 6 nationally after registering 5,850 points at the Texas Relays, a mark that ranks third all-time at Duke. Marsh and Wakefield's marks also rank second and third, respectively, in the East Region
Additionally, five other Blue Devils enter with top-10 times in the East Regional. On the men's side, graduate student
Erick Duffy leads the charge, checking in at No. 9 following a historic performance at the ACC Outdoor Championships. Less than a month after setting the school record in the event, the North Andover, Mass., native upended his previous best mark by seven centimeters as he cleared a height of 5.43m (17-9.75 feet) to become the first Duke men's outdoor pole vault champion since Clint Brown in 1967. Duffy's height leads the ACC by 10 centimeters.
Lauren Hoffman is a name to watch on the women's side as she gets set to compete in the 400m hurdles and 4x400m relay, two events she's had tremendous success in this season. Hoffman was an ACC Champion in both events, setting Morris Williams Stadium records in the process. The Haymarket, Va., native clocked 56 flat in the hurdles to claim the gold medal and upend the seven-year-old facility record set by Jernail Hayes back in 2015.then anchored the winning women's 4x400m relay team that blazed to a season-best 3:33.88 finish to smash the facility record set by Duke in 2019.
