DURHAM – Graduate student
Michaela Reinhart's silver-medal performance in the women's 10,000m and senior
Isabel Wakefield's bronze medal in the women's long jump headlined the first day of competition for Duke track and field at the 2022 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Morris Williams Stadium.
After day one, the women sit in third place with five of 21 scored events completed, while the men are in 11th with three of the 21 events completed.
From the jump, Reinhart positioned herself at the head of the pack and remained among the top-three for most of the race. The Louisville, Ky., native earned the highest placement of her career at the outdoor championships, clocking 33:22.99 to finish as runner-up and garner All-ACC First Team honors.
In the final field event of the day for Duke, Wakefield finished in third place and earned first team all-conference status behind a leap of 6.20m (20-4.25 feet).
Dana Baker and
Brynn King earned all-conference status for the Blue Devils as each earned nods to the second team – the first All-ACC honors of their career. Competing in the women's pole vault, King cleared a personal-best height of 4.09m (13-5 feet) to take fifth, while Baker placed sixth in the women's javelin after a throw of 48.34m (158-7 feet).
Zoe Hughes also flew out to 6.20m (20-4.25 feet), finishing in fourth for her second outdoor ACC honor.
Four Blue Devils punched their tickets to Saturday's finals of their respective events. Graduate student
Donovan Spearman advanced in the men's 200m and did so in record-breaking fashion. Spearman dashed a blistering 20.77 seconds, tying teammate
Miles Mingo for the school record in the event.
Duke was perfect in the prelims of the 400m hurdles as
Lauren Hoffman and
Nikki Merritt each secured their spots in the final. Hoffman clocked 56.93 seconds for the fastest time of her heat and of the field, while Merritt produced a solid run of 1:00.80, which ranks fifth all-time on the Duke charts. Graduate student
Nick Dahl advanced to the 1500m final in similar fashion as Hoffman, as he registered a 3:44.42 run to finish atop his heat and the field.
Multis also saw the Blue Devils start strong with
Erin Marsh and Hughes concluding the first day's events in the top two slots. Marsh commanded the field from the jump and finished day one in first with 3,667 points. The Buford, Ga., native's performance featured top-three placements in all four events, including wins and season-best performances in the 100m hurdles (13.29 seconds) and 200m dash (24.17 seconds).
Hughes currently stands in second after totaling 3,476 points through four events. The graduate student notched season bests in the shot put – where she took first via a throw of 13.37m (43-10.50 feet) on her second attempt, as well the 200m, which saw Hughes turn in a 24.88 second dash.
Sophomore
Brianna Smith finished the day in sixth place with 3,317 points, with her best performance of the day coming in her strongest event – the high jump. Smith registered a personal-best clearance of 1.78m (5-10 feet) in the high jump and moved into a tie for fourth all-time in Duke lore.
