Blue Devils Win Five Events at Virginia Grand Prix

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Duke track and field won five events and set a couple of top-five program marks on a solid day of competition at the Virginia Grand Prix Invitational.

Sophomore Scott Campbell and junior Luke Jackson revised the all-time Duke men's javelin list on Sunday behind personal-best performances by each. Campbell won the event and used a throw of 71m (232-11 feet) to move up to No. 3 in program lore, while Jackson placed second and carved his name into the No. 5 all-time slot at Duke after registering a 70.37m (230-10 feet) toss. Graduate student Chris Shanahan finished third among the field as he flung his javelin 66.44m (218 feet).

On the women's side, Dana Baker kept her steady outdoor season rolling with her third javelin event win of the year. The senior's second attempt reached 49.86m (163-7 feet) – more than 41 feet further than the runner-up.

The Blue Devils also swept the top-three placements in the women's 100m hurdles and men's pole vault. Senior Isabel Wakefield clocked 13.30 seconds to claim the 100m hurdle win, graduate student Erin Marsh right behind in second at 13.48 seconds. Freshman Chyler Turner took third after finishing in 14.07 seconds.

Graduate student Erick Duffy paced the Blue Devils in the pole vault as he cleared 5.12m (19-9.50 feet) to win the event, while classmate Michael Fairbanks and senior Cole Rowan rounded out the top three. Rowan placed second behind a leap of 5.02m (16-5.50 feet) and Fairbanks's vault of 4.92m (16-1.75 feet) was good for third among the field.

Duke's fifth win of the day came in the women's high jump where Marsh produced a season-best jump of 1.69m (5-6.50 feet).
