CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Duke track and field saw another school record come crashing down as graduate student
Miles Mingo turned in a historical and personal-best performance to rewrite the Duke 200m list on the final day of the Virginia Challenge.
After continuously showcasing strong running over the past few weeks, Mingo's efforts paid dividends in Saturday afternoon's race as he produced the fastest 200m time in program lore. The Rock Hill, S.C., native dashed 20.77 seconds to place fourth among the field, while his mark surpassed the previous school record set by Randy Jones (21.06 seconds) in 1989.
The final day of the meet also featured six additional top-five placements for the Blue Devils, beginning with a win in the women's 4x100m relay. Duke's quartet of
Halle Bieber,
Abby Geiser,
Carly King and
Kelcie Simmons clocked 45.07 seconds to lead the nine-team field.
Graduate student
Erin Marsh was back in action this weekend and picked up a pair of second-place finishes in the hurdles. Marsh kicked off the track events for Duke with the 100m hurdles, finishing as runner-up behind a season-best run of 13.40 seconds. Shortly after, the Buford, Ga., native made her collegiate debut in the 400m hurdles and turned in a strong run of 58.45 seconds, good for second among the field.
Duke received two more runner-up finishes from the women's 4x400m relay and junior
Beau Allen in the high jump elite. The Blue Devil quartet of
Jenna Crean, King,
Megan McGinnis and Simmons ran in 3:37.47, while Allen cleared 2.13m (6-11.75 feet).
Classmate
Davis Howell also competed in the high jump, representing the Blue Devils in the open section. Howell leapt a personal best of 1.97m (6-5.50 feet) to finish in a tie for third. Freshman
Michael Bennett also registered the fastest 400m hurdle time of his career, taking fifth via a run of 53.65 seconds.
