ATLANTA – Duke dropped a heartbreaker, 12-11, in a high-scoring battle with Georgia Tech Friday night at Russ Chandler Stadium in Atlanta, Ga.
An offensive game, Duke (16-22, 6-13 ACC) and Georgia Tech (25-14, 10-9 ACC) combined for 28 hits, five doubles and five home runs.
Offensively, junior
Graham Pauley led Duke at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a walk. Freshman
Devin Obee also recorded a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a double.
Junior right-hander
Marcus Johnson started on the mound for the Blue Devils. Johnson surrendered six runs, three earned, on six hits and three walks in five innings of work. The Fontana, Calif., native fanned six in the contest. Georgia Tech's Chance Huff started for the Yellow Jackets. Huff allowed six runs on seven hits and two walks.
Duke jumped on Georgia Tech early, scoring four runs before the Yellow Jackets could record an out. Freshman
Alex Mooney led off the game with a solo home run to right center, his third long ball of the year. Pauley doubled Duke's lead after stealing a base and scoring on a throwing error by the catcher. Classmate
Chad Knight capped the inning with a two-run homer to left field. Georgia Tech responded with three unearned runs in the bottom of the inning.
The Blue Devils added two more in the second inning to extend its lead to 6-3. Pauley hit a two-out two-run blast for the damage. The Yellow Jackets chipped away at Duke's lead, bringing the game to 6-5 after the third.
Each team scored in the fourth inning before scoreless fifth and sixth innings. Duke plated a pair as Pauley recorded an RBI single through the left side before senior
RJ Schreck hit a sacrifice fly to left. Georgia Tech plated one in the bottom half of the inning.
Duke reached its largest lead of the night in the seventh inning after scoring three runs on three hits. Graduate student
Wil Hoyle executed a squeeze bunt perfectly for the first run. Obee highlighted the inning with a two-RBI double down the left field line.
Georgia Tech responded with five runs on six hits in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game for the first time, 11-11.
The Blue Devils threatened in the top of the 10th, loading the bases. Georgia Tech hit a walk-off single in the bottom half of the inning to seal the win.
Duke and Georgia Tech return to Russ Chandler Stadium for game two of the series on Saturday at 4 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra and the Varsity Network App.
