WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – A seven-run eighth inning highlighted Duke's comeback bid, but it wasn't enough as the Blue Devils fell to Wake Forest, 16-11, on Sunday afternoon at David F. Couch Ballpark in Winston-Salem.Â
Â
Wake Forest (25-7, 9-6 ACC) jumped out to an 8-0 lead through three innings. The Blue Devils (13-19, 3-12 ACC) continually chipped away at the Demon Deacons' lead late, but the hosts answered with runs of their own in each bottom frame of the inning.
Â
SeniorÂ
RJ Schreck and sophomoreÂ
Alex Stone led Duke offensively. Schreck went 1-for-4 and connected on a grand slam to cap the seven-run eighth inning. Stone recorded a double and a home run as he went 2-for-2 on the day.Â
Â
JuniorÂ
Billy Seidl started on the bump for the Blue Devils, allowing two runs on two hits and five walks in 1.1 innings of work. Wake Forest's Teddy McGraw allowed two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out seven in 5.1 innings pitched.Â
Â
Duke scored a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning to pull the game to 8-2. FreshmanÂ
Alex Mooney led off the inning with a single up the middle, followed by consecutive walks to load the bases. JuniorÂ
Chad Knight plated Mooney via a sacrifice fly to center field before rookieÂ
Devin Obee hit an RBI groundout. The Demon Deacons added three in the bottom half of the frame to extend their lead to 11-2.
Â
Freshman
Andrew Yu led off the seventh inning with a solo home run to center field, his first career home run. Wake Forest responded with a home run of their own to left field in the bottom half of the inning.
Â
Duke scored seven runs in the top of the eighth to cut the deficit to two, 12-10. SophomoreÂ
Alex Stone doubled, and graduate studentÂ
Trevor Johnson singled to center before Duke was issued free bases in four consecutive at-bats with two outs to plate three runs. Schreck hit his sixth home run of the season to plate four more.
Â
Wake Forest would continue to respond, added four more in the bottom frame of the eighth inning.Â
Â
Stone led off the top of the ninth inning with a solo home run to left field, his sixth of the season to tie the team lead. Unfortunately, that was all that went for the Blue Devils in the ninth.
Â
Duke is back in action on Tuesday as the Blue Devils host Campbell at the historic Jack Coombs Field on Duke's campus. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
