JOHNSON'S BIG DAY
Duke graduate student
Trevor Johnson earned his first career start in game three against Virginia and made the most of the opportunity. Johnson, son of former big leaguer Mark Johnson, finished 3-for-3 with four RBIs, all coming from extra base hits. A pair of doubles matched his career high, while the solo home run in the first inning was his first home run since against Brown April 13, 2019.
VET IN THE PEN
Graduate student RHP
John Natoli has been strong out of the pen for the Blue Devils early this season. Natoli holds a 0.00 ERA in six appearances, including five consecutive scoreless appearances. Over the five-game stretch, Natoli has allowed just three hits and four walks while striking out nine in 7.2 innings of work.
DOUBLE DOWN
Duke holds 37 doubles this season. Junior
Graham Pauley leads the team with eight, ranking fourth in the conference. Junior
Chad Knight recently recorded three doubles against UMass Lowell on March 9 to become the first Blue Devil to hit three in a single game since March 2016.
UTILIZING THE LONG BALL
The Duke offense erupted last season, hitting 78 home runs in 55 games, including 12 games with three or more home runs. The 78 home runs ranked fourth all-time in program history, and were the most since 1998. In addition, Duke's six home runs in the NCAA Regional game against Wright State were the most in the past 20 seasons.
HOME SWEET HOME
Graduate students
Chris Crabtree and
Wil Hoyle have invested blood, sweat and tears into the Duke program after seeing it develop in their backyards. Hoyle, a native of Durham, and Crabtree, a native of Bahama, are no strangers to the Duke program and grew up facing each other in high school baseball in Durham. Now, the duo are co-captains of the 2022 team after leading the Blue Devils to unprecedented heights during their careers.
ALL-AMERICAN DUKE DUO
Junior right-handed pitcher
Marcus Johnson and senior outfielder
RJ Schreck each earned preseason All-America honors heading into the 2022 season. Johnson was named to the Perfect Game Second Team and D1Baseball Third Team. Johnson, a native of Fontana, Calif., was stellar out of the bullpen for the Blue Devils in 2021 and is expected to make his first collegiate start on opening day in 2022. He ranked tied for third in the ACC with a 3.05 ERA and tallied a team-leading five wins. Schreck earned Third Team honors from Collegiate Baseball. Schreck jumped onto the scene for Duke and will be the program's lone returning outfielder in 2022. He boasted a .337 batting average with a staggering 18 home runs and 52 RBIs. His 18 home runs are ranked fourth all-time by a Blue Devil in a single season.
