DURHAM – The Duke baseball team fell to East Carolina, 12-2, on Tuesday evening at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
Â
Duke (4-4) and East Carolina (3-5) were tight through seven innings as the Pirates led 4-2, but big eighth and ninth frames put the game out of reach.
Â
Senior right-handed pitcher
Cooper Stinson started on the mound for the Blue Devils. Stinson, a native of Peachtree Corners, Ga., struck out four while allowing four hits and two walks in four scoreless innings of work. Nick Logusch got the ball first for the Pirates, fanning five and walking three in four hitless innings.
Â
After four scoreless innings, ECU opened the scoring in the top of the fifth inning behind a double and two singles. Duke responded strong in the bottom of the inning, as graduate student
Chris Davis entered the game as a pinch hitter and sent the first pitch he saw over the wall in right field for a two-run home run. Davis' home run was Duke's first hit of the evening and tied the game at 2-2.
Â
East Carolina added a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to regain the lead and didn't look back.
Â
Graduate student
John Natoli made his first appearance as a Blue Devil out of the bullpen. After 724 days, Natoli made his first appearance in a collegiate game since March 8, 2020. He pitched one inning, allowing two unearned runs on one hit and striking out one.
Â
Duke continues its 15-game homestand as Bucknell comes to Durham for a three-game series this weekend. First pitch times are 4 p.m. on Friday, 3 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday at the DBAP.
Â
NOTES:
- Davis' home run was the first pinch-hit home run by a Blue Devil since Chase Cheek hit one at Clemson in May 2021.
- It was Davis' third home run of his career and the first since March 9, 2019, against UNC Greensboro while he was at Princeton.
