DURHAM – The Duke track and field program resumes indoor season competition this weekend at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet (Blacksburg, Va.) and Camel City Invitational (Winston-Salem, N.C.), both slated for Feb. 4-5.
Virginia Tech Elite Meet
Duke features 17 women and 25 men competing in the meet. Along with the Blue Devils, the 15th annual installment of the event includes a field comprised of athletes from Virginia Tech, Virginia, Pitt, Georgia Tech, Clemson, Tennessee, Charlotte, East Carolina, Kentucky, and VCU.
Friday's schedule of events is set to begin at 5 p.m., beginning with the women's long jump and men's 800m run. Saturday opens at 11 a.m. with the women's seeded pole vault.
Camel City Invitational
Graduate students
Nick Dahl and
Michaela Reinhart will represent the Blue Devils at the Camel City Invitational Saturday afternoon. Reinhart takes the track for the women's 3000 Meter Run Elite at approximately 2:02 p.m. Dahl will compete in the men's Mile Run Elite slated for a 3:18 p.m. start.
Duke Notables:
- The Duke women checked in at No. 18 in the Jan. 24 United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national rankings following a blazing start to the 2021-22 indoor season. The Blue Devil women enter this weekend ranked 21st.
- Graduate student Erin Marsh was tabbed the Jan. 25 ACC Women's Field Performer of the Week following a first-place finish in the pentathlon at the Virginia Tech Invitational.
- Marsh won the meet's event for the second year in a row after totaling 4,172 points, which included a first-place finish in the high jump on a leap of 1.73m (5-8 feet). Her point total currently ranks third nationally.
Last Time Out – Hokie Invitational
- The Blue Devils registered 21 top-five placements and tallied 10 all-time Duke marks.
- Dahl shattered the 10-year-old Duke record in the 3000m and clocked the program's first sub-eight-minute time in the event, finishing in 7:59.84.
- Senior Isabel Wakefield finished second in the pentathlon and stood just 13 points off Marsh's total with 4,159 points, moving into third on Duke's all-time list. Her performance included first-place finishes in the long jump (six meters (19-8 ¼ feet)) and 60m hurdles (8.27 seconds).
- Her 60m hurdle time set a new PR and moved her into second all-time in program history.
- Graduate students Josh Romine and CJ Ambrosio opened their indoor seasons with successful outings in the men's 3000m.
- Romine finished in 8:03.14 (3rd) to move into third all-time, while Ambrosio's time of 8:05.68 (5th) holds the No. 5 spot on Duke's list. Both marks were also personal bests.
- Graduate student Lauren Hoffman moved into second all-time on the 300m list with a 38.45 second PR. She also finished second in the 400m dash and locked up the No. 5 spot on the Duke list after clocking a personal best 54.14 seconds.
- Classmate Alex Schwedt also moved into the No. 2 spot in the 300m with a PR of 34.07 seconds.
- Freshman Mike Herzog improved on his No. 3 all-time triple jump mark for the second consecutive meet with a measurement of 14.65m (48-¾ feet).
- Sophomore Gage Knight finished the men's heptathlon with 5,431 points (5th), which ranks fifth all-time in program history. His performance included a first-place finish in the 60m dash of 6.96 seconds.
