DURHAM – With the regular season in the rearview mirror, the Duke cross country team turns its attention to postseason competition, starting with this weekend with the ACC Cross Country Championships. The championship meet, hosted by the University of Virginia, will be contested on Friday, Oct. 28, at the Panorama Farms course in Earlysville, Va.
MEET INFORMATION
- The men's 8K Championship is set for a 10:40 a.m. start, followed by the women's 6K Championship at 11:30.
- Friday's meet features 12 ranked teams across the men's (7) and women's (5) fields, including the 29th-ranked Duke men.
- The top-21 men's and women's finishers at the ACC Championships will earn All-ACC recognition. The first true freshman to cross the finish line in the men's and women's races will be recognized as ACC Freshman of the Year.
- ACC Network plans live coverage of both meets, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Longtime Duke Director of Track & Field, Norm Ogilvie, will be on the call alongside Shawn Kenney.
- Live results will be posted during and at the conclusion of both races on FlashResults.
WHAT TO KNOW
- The Duke men enter Friday's race ranked No. 29 in the USTFCCCA Coaches' Poll. The Blue Devils checked into the polls for the first time in week five following strong pack running at the Nuttycombe Invitational.
- Dalia Frias enters the conference meet after garnering ACC Freshman of the Week honors for a third time this season, after another steady performance at the Nuttycombe Invitational.
- Frias earned the distinction for the third time in as many meets as she was the top women's finisher among all ACC true freshmen, while also posting the second-fastest time for the Duke women in the 6K race. The Hermosa Beach, Calif., native clocked 20:37.8 to place 67th overall out of 263 athletes.
- On the men's side, the Duke lineup consists of Matyas Csiki-Fejer, Nick Dahl, Carter Dillon, Will Dixon, Austin Gabay, Zach Kinne, Jared Kreis, Owen MacKenzie, Sam Rivera and Chris Theodore.
- The Blue Devil women will be represented by Emily Cole, Anna Corcoran, Karly Forker, Dalia Frias, Katie Hamilton, Caroline Howley, Amina Maatoug, Ashlyn Ramos and Kelli Wilson.
LAST TIME OUT
- Competing amid a loaded, nationally-ranked men's and women's fields at the Nuttycombe Invitational on Friday, Duke cross country closed out the regular season with strong running at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course.
- Duke's performance was highlighted by the men's squad beating out four ranked teams - No. 11 Iowa State, No. 14 Gonzaga, No. 20 Harvard and No. 27 Michigan State.
- The Blue Devils produced five top-100 individual finishers across the men's and women's fields –Maatoug (28th), Frias (67th), Theodore (57th), MacKenzie (77th) and Kinne (91st).
- In the team standings, the men placed 19th with 495 points, while the women finished 32nd with 676 points.
- For the third consecutive meet, Maatoug and Frias were the top-two finishers for the Duke women.
- Maatoug ran her 6K in 20:20.3 to place 28th, followed by Frias who clocked 20:37.8 for 67th.
- Ramos (21:10.5), Hamilton (21:58.1) and Forker (21:59.1) were the next three Blue Devils to finish.
- Theodore, MacKenzie and Kinne led the charge for the Duke men. The trio ran their respective 8K races in 23:48.8, 23:56.9 and 24:01.0, respectively, with Kinne making the biggest leap jumping 22 spots over the final 2000m.
- Rivera (24:05.6) and Dahl (24:32.0) rounded out the top-five finishers for the men's squad.
A LOOK BACK TO THE 2021 ACC CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
- Duke looks to improve on last season's performance at the ACC Championships that saw the Blue Devil men place seventh with 161 points, while the women finished ninth with 247.
- The Blue Devils produced three All-ACC selections in Michaela Reinhart, Charlotte Tomkinson and Josh Romine.
- Reinhart earned her fourth straight all-conference honor, clocking 20:45.1 to take 14th overall.
- Tomkinson finished in 16th with a time of 20:46.2 to earn her first All-ACC honor.
- Romine finished 21st overall at 24:16.5. After sitting at 30th at the 6K split, he finished strong and jumped up nine spots over the final two kilometers to earn his first career All-ACC selection.
UP NEXT
Postseason action will continue for the Blue Devils, as both teams will be back in action on Nov. 11 at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park in Louisville, Ky.
