DURHAM – The Duke volleyball team opened the 2021 home slate with a 3-0 victory (25-20, 25-22, 25-16) over Elon Tuesday evening in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
With the win, the Blue Devils remain undefeated at 3-0 as the Phoenix drop to 1-3.
"We're a work in progress right now," head coach
Jolene Nagel said. "You know, it's just the third match of the season. But we went into this tonight making sure that all of us were there in the moment because we really want to grow from this test we were going to have tonight, this match that we were going to have tonight. And I think we did accomplish that. We learned more about ourselves and it was a great opportunity for us tonight to play an opponent that we respected."
Duke was led by juniors
Lizzie Fleming and
Gracie Johnson with eight kills each and just three combined errors to help lead the Blue Devils to a .275 hitting percentage. Junior
Moorea Wood also added six, while freshman
Rylie Kadel added five and just one error to hit .500 in her Cameron Indoor Stadium debut.
Setter
Alex Springate dished 33 assists as she found nine Blue Devils while Duke's defense was split fairly evenly. Libero
Mackenzie Cole led the team with 14 digs, followed by Springate (9) and Johnson (8). Fleming got it done at the net once again with four blocks while
Georgia Stavrinides and
Lily Cooper each added three to help limit the Phoenix to just a .096 match hitting percentage.
The Blue Devils came out hot in the first set to hit .342 percent to Elon's .161 as Springate notched 14 quick assists. The match was tied up at eight early before a 4-0 Duke run to force a Phoenix timeout. Elon went on a run of its own to pull within three (22-19), but couldn't pull out the set.
The tables turned in the second as Elon led 18-11. The Blue Devils clawed back to trail by one (19-18) with help from Fleming and Stavrinides' back-to-back blocks. For the set, Duke tallied six blocks to Elon's two.
Much like the first set, Duke used a fast start to get an edge on Elon, forcing the Phoenix to use its second and final timeout of the set at the 16-7 mark.
The Phoenix were led by Leah Daniel with 13 kills while libero Jordan Gower picked up 17 digs.
Duke will host the first of two tournaments in Cameron Indoor Stadium, first beginning with the Duke Invitational Sept. 3-4. The Blue Devils welcome College of Charleston, Howard and Miami (OH) Friday and Saturday.
