MILTON, Ga. – Freshman
Ian Siebers posted a top-10 finish to lead the Duke men's golf team at the 2021 ACC Championship, as the stroke play portion of the championship concluded on Sunday at the Capital City Club's Crabapple Course in Milton, Ga.
After rounds of 66 and 69 on Friday, Siebers carded a 73 on Sunday to finish tied for 10th on the individual leaderboard, marking the best finish by a Duke freshman at the ACC Championship since
Brinson Paolini finished tied for fourth in 2010.
As a team, the Blue Devils finished eighth in 54 holes of stroke play with a total score of 23-over 863. The top four teams advanced to the match play semifinals later on Sunday – North Carolina (-26), Clemson (-11), NC State (-9) and Florida State (+5). The match play final to determine the ACC team champion is set for Monday.
North Carolina's Peter Fountain claimed the ACC individual title at 10-under par, edging NC State's Benjamin Shipp by one stroke and UNC's Austin Hitt by two on the par-70 Crabapple Course in suburban Atlanta.
After Saturday's action was washed out by rain, Siebers entered Sunday at 5-under par and within three strokes of the individual lead. The freshman from Bellevue, Wash., was even on the day through his 14th hole Sunday, but a tough finish of double bogey and bogey on his 17th and 18th holes would knock him out of a potential top-five finish.
He signed for a 73 on Sunday with a 54-hole total of 2-under par 208 for his fourth top-10 this season, which stands tied for the third most by a Duke freshman all-time.
Senior
Adrien Pendaries finished tied for 31st at 5-over 215 with rounds of 68, 71 and 76, while classmate
Qi wen Wong enjoyed a strong championship by finishing tied for 33rd and one stroke back of Pendaries, including a 72 on Sunday. Also for Duke on Sunday, senior
Evan Katz carded a 76 and graduate student
Steven DiLisio shot 78.
North Carolina recorded a 275 in the third round of stroke play and its three-day total of 814 (-26) was the lowest in ACC history. Clemson (-11) began the day in third but shot 2-under as a team (278) to move ahead of NC State (-9) and secure the No. 2 seed in match play. Florida State (+5) held off Wake Forest (+6) and Georgia Tech (+6) to claim the final match play position. Virginia (+19) was seventh, followed by Duke (+23), Louisville (+25), Virginia Tech (+27), Notre Dame (+30) and Boston College (+33).
