CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Duke baseball team came up short at No. 19 Miami, 3-1, on Friday to open a three-game ACC series at Mark Light Field at Alex Rodriguez Stadium in Coral Gables, Fla.
Redshirt junior Wil Hoyle led the Blue Devils at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double for Duke's lone extra-base hit of the evening.
Junior Cooper Stinson started on the bump for Duke and was tagged with the loss for the Blue Devils. Stinson allowed three runs, all earned, on five hits, two walks and a hit batter. The Peachtree, Ga., native also struck out two during his time on the hill.
Duke (11-11, 5-8 ACC) saw Miami (14-8, 8-7 ACC) take a two-run lead after scoring on a sacrifice fly and a solo home run in the first and fifth, respectively. The Blue Devils responded by halving the hosts' lead in the top of the fifth inning as they strung together three consecutive hits with two outs, led by Hoyle's double. Hoyle scored in the next at bat as graduate student Chase Cheek battled for an RBI single.
The Hurricanes added another solo shot in the bottom of the sixth for the game's final score of 3-1.
Senior Matt Dockman appeared out of the bullpen for another stellar appearance. The Hilliard, Ohio, native recorded his third consecutive scoreless appearance in relief. The southpaw allowed one hit and recorded two strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work.
