DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 14-ranked Duke field hockey team was edged by No. 9 Syracuse, 2-1, in a Saturday afternoon conference matchup at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.

The Blue Devils (3-10, 1-2 ACC) looked to rally in the fourth quarter, but the Orange's (8-4, 1-0 ACC) two early goals would be enough for their first win in ACC play this spring.

Syracuse opened the scoring in the 14th minute as Pleun Lammers scored off the penalty corner to put the Orange ahead, 1-0. Following a quiet first quarter for the Blue Devils, Duke took four shots in the second frame, including one on target.

The Orange tacked on an insurance goal in the 42nd minute as SJ Quigley tapped in a shot off a corner. Duke freshman
Darcy Bourne cut the deficit to 2-1 as the rookie connected with the back of the goal for the seventh time this season. Sophomore
Hannah Miller found Bourne in front of the goal to notch her fifth assist of the season.

Graduate student
Eva Nunnink led Duke in shots, registering four of her team's seven on the afternoon. Along with Bourne, junior
Noor van de Laar and sophomore
Josie Varney each tallied one shot in the contest.

Freshman
Piper Hampsch was active in the cage, making four saves on the day. She played 56:30 minutes until head coach
Pam Bustin pulled her for an extra player on the attack. Syracuse earned a corner at the 57:58-minute mark, but the Blue Devils' defense stood strong without Hampsch. The Blue Devils nearly earned a corner in the final seconds, but the clock would expire for a 2-1 Syracuse win.

Duke returns action next Friday, April 2, as the Blue Devils make the short trip to Chapel Hill for a 2 p.m. contest at Karen Shelton Stadium.
