CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – In a double overtime affair, the 15th-ranked Duke field hockey team came up just short as No. 1 North Carolina used a penalty stroke in the 78th minute to win the game, 4-3, on Friday afternoon at Karen Shelton Stadium.Â

The Blue Devils (3-11, 1-3 ACC) took the Tar Heels (13-1, 3-0) to extra time for the second consecutive game on the road. Freshman goaltender
Piper Hampsch had a stellar performance in the cage with a career-high 19 saves in the setback. The last time a Blue Devil goalkeeper recorded 19 saves was Heather Moles versus California on Oct. 19, 1993. Hampsch and Duke's defense faced a high-powered North Carolina offense, which took 32 shots, including 23 on target, and earned 14 corners.

Duke had the upper hand in the first overtime period, outshooting North Carolina, 5-2. Freshman
Darcy Bourne nearly put it away for the Blue Devils at 69:14, but North Carolina's Amanda Hendry was there to make the save.

The Blue Devils were a man down for part of the second overtime period due to a yellow card, but the Tar Heels' heavy offensive pressure outlasted Duke's defense, winning the game on a penalty stroke. Bryn Boylan scored the stroke to give UNC the win.

After North Carolina's Erin Matson registered an early tally in the fourth minute, Duke responded with two unanswered goals in the second quarter to take a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.

Libby Thompson knotted the game at one apiece in the 21st minute, stepping just inside the circle and ripping a shot past the Tar Heels' goalkeeper into the far post of the cage. The Blue Devils jumped ahead, 2-1, at the 24:34 mark as Bourne's shot off the penalty corner shot trickled across the line. The tally was the eighth for the rookie this season. Senior

North Carolina tallied back-to-back goals in the third quarter, scoring from a penalty corner in the 36th minute before adding another nearly two minutes later to regain a 3-2 lead.

Noor van de Laar tapped in her second tally of the season as she rattled home a shot off the rebound (3-3). With three minutes remaining in the frame, the Tar Heels appeared to take the lead, but the officials called off the score.

It was a scoreless fourth quarter in which Duke's defense was stellar, successfully defending seven North Carolina corners as Hampsch collected six saves.

The Blue Devils return to action next weekend as Duke hosts Louisville for Senior Day on Saturday, April 10. Duke will honor its four seniors pregame. First hit will be at 1 p.m. at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.Â
