DURHAM, N.C. – Tied 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth, No. 13 Duke plated two runs to defeat Virginia, 3-1, in ACC action on Friday evening at the Duke Softball Stadium.
With their 10th straight victory, the Blue Devils up their overall record to 16-1 and 5-1 in league play while the Cavaliers fall to 6-10 and 2-8.
Senior
Peyton St. George collected her seventh win (7-0) of the season, hurling seven complete innings in which she struck out 10 batters. The win gives the senior a victory in 12 of her last 13 appearances dating back to last season.
Improving her hit streak to 13 games, junior
Deja Davis opened the contest with a leadoff double in the opening frame, garnering Duke's first hit of the evening. Freshman

Caroline Jacobsen registered back-to-back hits in the second while junior
Kyla Morris drew a walk to load the bases. Davis sent a sacrifice fly to center field to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 advantage.
After a scoreless third frame, the Cavaliers responded in the fourth, tallying a double and an RBI single to tie the contest at 1-1.
In the sixth, senior
Jameson Kavel struck out but reached base on a wild pitch. Junior
Kristina Foreman garnered Duke's final hit of the contest on a bunt single to the pitcher as Virginia didn't have anyone covering first base. Sophomore
Kamryn Jackson walked to load the bases and senior
Sydney Bolan, who entered to pinch hit, sent an RBI groundout to second to score the winning run (2-1).
Jacobsen reached on a dropped fly ball in left field, bringing Foreman across the plate for the winning score of 3-1.
The Blue Devils and Cavaliers return for day two of the series tomorrow with a doubleheader. First pitch for the first game is slated for 1 p.m. at the Duke Softball Stadium.
