DURHAM, N.C. – Rallying in extra innings, junior
Caroline Jacobsen used a walk-off home run in game two to claim the series as No. 13 Duke swept the doubleheader against Virginia Saturday. The Blue Devils picked up a 5-1 victory in game one and outlasted the Cavaliers, 10-9, in nine frames at the Duke Softball Stadium.
Duke continues its winning ways, riding a 12-game win streak to improve to 18-1 and 7-1 in ACC action while Virginia falls to 6-12 and 2-10.
The Blue Devils were led by junior
Kristina Foreman who went 4-for-7 on the day with two stolen bases, four runs and five RBIs, nearly hitting for the cycle in game two with a double, triple and home run. Senior
Jameson Kavel put together a 3-for-6 performance and Jacobsen went 3-for-8 with a double, triple and the walk-off solo home run plus five RBIs.
Junior
Shelby Walters recorded the game one victory, upping her season record to 7-0, while senior
Peyton St. George collected the win in game two for her eighth (8-0) of the 2021 campaign.
Game 1: Duke 5, Virginia 1
In a low-hitting affair, Duke got on the board first in the fourth inning, plating two runs on two hits. Kavel opened the frame with a leadoff single up the middle and Foreman took a four-count walk. In the next at-bat, Jacobsen sent a two-run triple to right center to put the Blue Devils ahead, 2-0.
Junior
Deja Davis reached on a bunt single just inside the right field line, upping her hit streak to 14 games in the fifth. The Blue Devils drew three straight walks, including a bases-loaded walk by Kavel that brought home Davis. Foreman reached on a fielding error by the third baseman which allowed Duke to tack on two more runs (5-0).
Virginia tallied two hits in the top of the sixth as an RBI double to left field would score the final run of the contest (5-1).
Walters hurled all seven innings for Duke and notched two strikeouts en route to her seventh win of the year. Her one earned run was only the third this season.
Game 2: Duke 10, Virginia 9 (9)
Virginia took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning with two home runs – one solo homer and a two-run shot. Duke answered with a score in the bottom half as senior
Kendyl Lange notched her first hit of the season, tripling to right center. Kavel sent an RBI single through the left side to score Lange, cutting UVA's advantage to 3-1.
The Cavaliers added three more runs in the second with another pair of home runs (6-1). The Blue Devils began their comeback in the third with an infield single from sophomore
Gisele Tapia, followed by doubles from Foreman and Jacobsen to close in on Virginia's lead, 6-4.
Scoring one run in both the fifth and sixth innings, Virginia led 8-4 into the bottom of the fifth. Foreman helped Duke pull two runs back with an RBI triple to right center and scoring on an RBI groundout by Jacobsen (8-6).
Trailing 9-6 in the bottom of the sixth, freshman
Francesca Frelick pinch hit and executed with an RBI single up the middle. Lange returned as a baserunner and crossed the plate on Kavel's second single of the contest (9-8).
Down one run in the bottom of the seventh, Foreman forced extra innings with her third long ball of the season, a blast to straightaway center to make it a 9-9 ballgame. After a quick eighth frame, St. George struck out back-to-back batters to retire the Virginia side in the ninth.
With two outs on the board, Jacobsen blasted the first pitch she saw for the first home run of her junior campaign in walk-off fashion, securing a 10-9 Duke victory.
Duke utilized four pitchers as senior
Brianna Butler earned the start, throwing 1.1 frames with two strikeouts. Freshman
Claire Davidson and Walters entered in relief, pitching 3.2 and 2.0 innings, respectively. Walters registered three punchouts before St. George dealt the last two innings, only letting up one hit while tallying four K's in her eighth win of the year.
Notables
- Davis' 14-game hit streak was the longest in Duke softball history.
- Duke stole a season-high four bases in game one.
- The Blue Devils' 11 hits and 10 RBIs in game two are a season high.
- Duke's 37 at-bats in game two ties a program record which happened on two occasions – vs. Liberty (3/27/19) and at Longwood (5/5/18).
- Foreman's three hits and Jacobsen's three RBIs mark season highs for the juniors.
The Blue Devils look to secure the series sweep versus the Cavaliers tomorrow at 1 p.m.
