DURHAM – Notre Dame scored a pair of first-half goals to defeat the Blue Devils, 2-0, in ACC men's soccer action Friday evening at Koskinen Stadium. Duke held the Fighting Irish to eight shots for the game, but couldn't find the back of the net over the 90 minutes.
Neither team was able to create many quality scoring opportunities over the course of the game as both teams combined for 14 shots in the game and only five on frame. Notre Dame (7-5-0, 4-3-0) capitalized on their first chance of the night and won a penalty kick to add an insurance goal later in the first half.
The Blue Devils had the early possession to start the contest, but it was Notre Dame getting on the board first. Top scorer Jack Lynn got loose down the left side and beat his defender to the end line. He passed the ball across the face of the goal where Aiden McFadden took a crack at goal, only to be denied by an outstanding reaction save by Duke goalkeeper
Eliot Hamill.
McFadden had another go at goal cleared off the line by
Matthias Frick, but not out of danger as the third time was the charm and the Notre Dame forward tapped it in from six yards for the 1-0 lead in the seventh minute.
In the 23rd minute, Duke rookie
Thorleifur Ulfarsson used a good individual effort to draw a foul 25 yards from goal. The Icelandic striker stepped behind the ball and curled a shot around the wall, but just wide of the right post for a goal kick.
Less than 10 minutes later, the Blue Devils put together nice combination play in the penalty box, but the Notre Dame defense was able to clear away a touch from
Jack Doran as he tried to cut it back to get a shot off.
Notre Dame held a 6-2 advantage in shots in the opening 45 minutes, taking a 1-0 lead into the locker room.
The Blue Devils did a better job of possession in the second half, but continued to miss that pass into the final third. Duke was able to get into the Notre Dame penalty area a few times, but weren't able to find the open looks or take the half chances.
The Fighting Irish never threatened in the second half as they settled in defensively and did well to manage the time and hold on to their 2-0 lead. Duke outshot the Irish, 4-2, in the second stanza and held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks for the game.
Hamill finished the night with two saves, while Keagan McLaughlin picked up his seventh win of the year as well as the clean sheet.
Duke (3-8-2, 3-5-0) returns to action March 19 against No. 8 Pittsburgh. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., on ACC Network Extra.
