DURHAM, N.C. – Senior
Erin Marsh made history on opening day of the NCAA Indoor Championships, setting a program record in the pentathlon, en route to a bronze medal in the event overall.
Marsh smashed the program record with a point total of 4,344, surpassing the previous high set by
Karli Johonnot in 2016. In finishing in third place, she becomes the first Blue Devils to medal since
Megan Clark placed second in the pole vault in 2016 and takes home First Team All-America honors.
"Today was something I've dreamed of for years now," said Marsh. "Breaking the school record and finishing in the top three at such a competitive meet is an amazing feeling. I'm so proud to represent Duke at this level and am lucky to have like coach
[Shawn] Wilbourn and
Jacky [Mendes] in my corner getting me through each event this weekend."
Marsh got off to a quick start to begin the day, taking first place in the opening event of the pentathlon with a time of 8.13 in the 60m hurdles. Her run was 0.14 seconds faster than the second-place finisher and contributed 1,110 points to her total.
Some solid performances kept Marsh in the top three overall, with sixth-place finishes in the high jump and shot put. Marsh notched a jump of 1.72m (5-7.75 feet) and recorded a throw of 11.95m (39-2.5 feet).
A third-place finish in the long jump proved critical for Marsh, who vaulted into second place overall, thanks to a jump of 6.00m (19-8.25 feet). Entering the final event, Marsh was able to turn in a PR mark of 2:17.53 in the 800m, good for fifth place in the event and securing her place in the top-three.
The NCAA Indoor Championships will continue on March 12, with Marsh competing in the 60m hurdles semifinals and
Leigha Torino competing in the 800m semifinals. The 60m hurdles are scheduled to begin at 8:15 p.m. ET, while the 800m will starting at 8:55 p.m.
