DURHAM, N.C. – After seven regular season meets, the Duke track & field team is set to compete at the 2021 ACC Indoor Championships from Feb. 25-27 in Clemson, S.C.
SETTING THE SCENE
- Events will take place in the Clemson University Indoor Complex, where the Blue Devils previously competed this season at the Orange and Purple Elite Meet (Jan. 9) and the Tiger Paw Invite (Jan 12-13).
- The 2020 ACC Indoor Championships proved to be last season's final competition, as the NCAA Championships and the entirety of the outdoor campaign were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
- The Duke women finished fifth in the team standings that weekend in South Bend, Ind., logging 53.5 points. Four Blue Devils had medal-winning performances (two gold, two silver) while 11 All-ACC honors were earned in women's competitions.
- The men placed ninth at Notre Dame last February with 25 team points, as six Blue Devils garnered a total of seven All-ACC honors.
- Friday and Saturday's portion of the meet will feature coverage on ACC Network Extra. A solo live stream will carry until 4 p.m. Friday, before Shawn Kenney takes over play-by-play duties with Larry Rawson alongside to provide analysis from 4-8 p.m.
- Saturday's coverage again begins with a live stream and then will feature Kenney and Rawson on the call from 12 p.m. until the event's conclusion.
AMONG THE ACC
- The Blue Devils feature numerous student-athletes who have performed among the best in the conference this indoor season.
- The Duke women boast 16 competitors who have recorded a total of 28 marks that rank in the top 20 in the ACC for their respective events.
- On the men's side, 12 Blue Devils hold a total of 19 marks ranking in the top 20 in the ACC for their respective events.
- The women's 4x400m relay team has the fourth-fastest time, while the men's 4x400m squad maintains the seventh-fastest mark in the conference heading into this weekend.
MARSH AIMS FOR MORE SUCCESS ON ACC STAGE
- Senior Erin Marsh has had some of her best collegiate performances at past ACC Championships, highlighted by a gold medal in the pentathlon last February.
- While Marsh will not compete in the pentathlon this weekend, the Buford, Ga., native looks to collect more conference accolades in the women's high jump, women's long jump and women's 60m hurdles.
- She set a PR in the high jump at the Hokie Invitational (Jan. 22), clearing 1.79 meters (5-10.5 feet).
- That height is currently first in the ACC this season and ranks third in Duke indoor history.
- Marsh also clocked Duke's fastest 60m hurdle time of the season – and fourth fastest in the conference – when she ran 8.32 seconds at the "Doc" Hale Virginia Tech Elite Meet (Feb. 5).
- Her seasonal-best long jump distance of 5.92m (19-5.25) is the best by a Blue Devil this year and ranks eighth in the ACC.
- A six-time All-ACC honoree, Marsh is also set to run in the 4x400m relay.
- On Jan. 27, Marsh was named ACC Field Performer of the Week for the first time in her career.
MELLINGER DISPLAYS VERSATILITY IN 2021
- Sophomore Ezra Mellinger emerged as one of the ACC's most well-rounded competitors this season, and will take part in the men's long jump, 200m and 4x400m relay at Clemson.
- The native of Ronks, Pa., ran a seasonal-best 200m time of 21.55 seconds at the Tiger Paw Invite two weeks ago. That mark ranks seventh in the ACC.
- He set a new PR in the long jump at the Hokie Invitational, recording a mark of 7.63m (25-0.5) that was good for first in the event and fourth in the ACC this season. It also moved him up to third all-time in the Duke record book.
- In five long jump competitions this season, Mellinger has placed in the top 10 each time, including two first-place results.
- He was named ACC Co-Men's Field Performer of the Week after the season-opening Orange and Purple Elite Meet at Clemson.
BEATTY TAKES ON SHOT PUT & WEIGHT THROW
- Redshirt-senior Ben Beatty put together another strong indoor season for the Blue Devils, highlighted by a school record 18.42 meters (50-5.25 feet) in the shot put at the "Doc" Hale Virginia Tech Invitational.
- That mark ranks fourth in the ACC this season.
- Beatty has reached the 18-meter benchmark in two of his last three shot put competitions. His distance of 18.17m (59-7.5) was good for second place at the Virginia Tech Challenge last weekend.
- He has also compiled an impressive string of results in the weight throw, as each of his four marks this season placed in the top 10 at that event.
- Beatty's seasonal-best mark of 17.44m (57-2.75) also came at the "Doc" Hale meet at Virginia Tech.
- He holds the Duke program record of 19.08m (62-7.25).
KING AMONG TOP ACC POLE VAULTERS
- Sophomore Brynn King, who competed in her first collegiate event in January, has asserted herself as one of the ACC's most consistent performers in the women's pole vault this season.
- She opened the campaign with a first-place clearance of 4.00m (13-1.5) at the Orange and Purple Elite Meet.
- Her PR came the following week, when she recorded a height of 4.22m (13-10.0) at the Virginia Tech Invitational.
- That mark ranks fourth in the ACC and 18th in the nation heading into championship weekend.
- She has placed in the top 10 in each of her six appearances in the pole vault, and has cleared the 13-foot benchmark in five competitions.
REINHART, AMBROSIO HEADLINE DISTANCE RUNNERS
- Seniors Michaela Reinhart and CJ Ambrosio are among 10 Blue Devils slated to compete in middle and long-distance events.
- Reinhart will line up for the women's 3000m, an event she claimed silver in at last season's ACC Indoor Championships.
- Her time of 9:13.13 at Notre Dame set a PR and ranks second in Duke indoor history.
- Reinhart is coming off a first-team All-ACC performance at the ACC Cross Country Championships on Oct. 30.
- Ambrosio leads the men's group in the 3000m and 5000m. He also collected All-ACC status during the cross country season, and he will aim to surpass his 5000m time of 14:32.38 that he clocked at last year's indoor conference meet.
- Sophomore Samantha Schadler will be running in her first collegiate 3000m. The Tubac, Ariz., native emerged as one of the top cross country runners in the conference this past fall, as she finished in the top 10 at all three meets she competed at, including a 10th-place showing at the ACC Championships.
GOLDEN POTENTIAL IN 4x400M RELAYS
- Both the men's and women's 4x400m relay teams have performed exceptionally well in limited appearances this season.
- The men's squad posted a second-place time of 3:14.69 at the "Doc" Hale Virginia Tech Elite Meet, which ranks fifth all-time at Duke.
- A quartet of Mellinger, graduate student Alex Schwedt, freshman Alejandro Rodriguez and freshman Jackson Walker bested that time by clocking 3:14.38 at the Tiger Paw Invite.
- That time enters the weekend as seventh-fastest in the ACC, and ranks fourth in Duke indoor history.
- The women's relay team got its season started with a first-place showing at the Virginia Tech Invitational, as senior Lauren Hoffman, sophomore Carly King, freshman Hailey Williams and junior Nikki Merritt put together a time of 3:49.84 in Blacksburg.
- Hoffman, King, Marsh and junior Kelcie Simmons clocked a seasonal-best time of 3:40.30 at the "Doc" Hale Virginia Tech Elite Meet, which stands as the fourth-fastest in the ACC in 2021.
