DUKE VS. COASTAL CAROLINA
Duke and East Carolina meet for the 54th time in the two programs' history, dating back to 1958. The Pirates have a grip on the series right now, leading the Blue Devils 39-14. Duke is 6-23 all-time when it travels to Greenville, N.C. Duke's most recent win, a 7-2 victory in March of 2019, snapped a 17-game losing streak that lasted over 20 years, from 1998-2019. The Blue Devils' last win at East Carolina came in April 25, 1996. Head coach
Chris Pollard owns a 1-6 career record against East Carolina with all seven meetings coming while he was at Duke.

SCOUTING THE PIRATES
East Carolina opened the 2021 season in a winning fashion, sweeping Rhode Island in a three-game series. The Pirates walked off 3-2 in the first game before flexing their strength in the last two games and outscoring the visitors 19-5. With two National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association preseason All-Americans, Bryson Worrell and pitcher Jake Kuchmaner, East Carolina is looking for success in 2021. Going into the season, the Pirates were picked the favorites to win the American Athletic Conference and garnered a preseason ranking in five of the six national polls. Currently, East Carolina sits No. 16 and No. 24 in the Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America polls, respectively.

PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA NODS
Senior catcher
Michael Rothenberg and junior right-handed pitcher
Cooper Stinson both earned preseason All-America honors heading into the 2021 season. Rothenberg, Duke's mainstay behind the plate, was named to D1Baseball's Preseason All-America third team after leading the ACC in on-base percentage (.551) last season. He currently owns a reached-base streak of 24 consecutive games, dating back to 2019. Rothenberg batted .349 throughout the 2020 campaign, tying for 18th in the conference, while compiling 17 RBI to lead the Blue Devils. Stinson was named a third team preseason All-American by the NCBWA. Stinson put together a 3-0 record as Duke's Saturday starter in the shortened 2020 season. He carried a 0.42 ERA through the year, ranking first in the league and 15th nationally. Stinson opened the 2020 campaign with 19.2 consecutive innings pitched of scoreless baseball. In addition, Stinson ranked eighth in the ACC in WHIP (0.92) and ninth in walks allowed per nine innings (1.66).

FRESHMEN PITCHERS SHINE AGAINST COASTAL CAROLINA
Duke's freshman arms came to play on Sunday and helped the Blue Devils win game three of their opening weekend series. With the game tied in the bottom of the seventh inning and runners on first and second, Duke went to freshman
Nick Conte. Conte, in his first appearance, put in 1.2 innings of work with three strikeouts while allowing just one unearned run to get the win. Classmate
Josh Allen came in to close things out for the Blue Devils, recording two Ks in just three batters and earning the save. In addition to Conte and Allen, southpaw
Luke Fox also put together a strong showing. Fox threw 3.0 innings of scoreless baseball and tallied three strikeouts.

WELCOME TO K-VILLE
The Blue Devil pitching staff has ascended to new heights over the past three seasons, shattering the school's single-season strikeout record in 2018 and 2019. Last season, the Blue Devil pitching staff was on pace to break the school record once again, serving 183 strikeouts in just 143.1 innings pitched through 16 games. The Blue Devils 11.51 strikeouts per nine innings would have set a program record through a full season and ranked 16th nationally when the season was canceled. This season, Duke is off to a hot start, fanning 35 batters in just 26.1 innings pitched for a ratio of 11.96 strikeouts per nine innings.
