BLACKSBURG, Va. – Sophomore
Kinsie Huggins recorded a top-five mark in Duke history in the women's shot put and redshirt-senior
Ben Beatty placed second in the men's shot put to highlight day two at the Virginia Tech Challenge.
Huggins' shot put distance of 13.43 meters (44-0.75 feet) was good for fifth in the event and lands her fifth all-time among Blue Devils. She bested her previous PR of 13.02m (42-8.75), which was set her last time in Blacksburg at the "Doc" Hale Virginia Tech Elite Meet.
Beatty earned his best placement in a shot put event this season with a mark of 18.17m (59-7.50). He has posted a top-10 result in each of his five appearances in the shot put during the indoor campaign.
Freshman
Moorea Mitchell followed up a strong Friday night with a PR of 11.91m (39-1.0) in the women's shot put.
Sophomore
Brynn King cleared the four-meter benchmark in the women's pole vault for the fifth time in six competitions this season, as her 4.04m (13-3.0) mark was good for sixth place on Saturday.
Another highlight on the day came in Winston-Salem, N.C., where senior
Leigha Torino took first place in the women's 800m with a time of 2:09.19 as Duke's lone representative at the Camel City Invitational. Torino trailed by nearly three full seconds going into the race's final leg, but was able to muster a finishing time that was 0.46 seconds faster than the second-place runner.
It marked the second time this season Torino clocked a first-place finish in the 800m, and the fourth time she finished in the top 10. Each of her times this season have been below 2:12.20, which was her PR coming into 2021.
Duke now turns its attention to the ACC Indoor Championships next week in Clemson, S.C. Events will begin Thursday, Feb. 25 and carry through Saturday, Feb. 27. More information on the Blue Devils at the ACC Indoor Championships, including participants and start times, will be released over the next week.
