DURHAM – The Duke volleyball team dropped a three-set match (24-26, 15-25, 21-25) to Miami Friday evening in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
With the setback, the Blue Devils drop to 11-5 overall (2-3 ACC) while the Hurricanes improve to 14-2 (5-1 ACC). Miami used a strong hitting percentage (.371) and 12 blocks to secure the victory.
Duke was led by senior Ade Owokoniran with 15 kills and just four errors to hit .367 percent to pace the offense. Setter Alex Springate dished 29 assists while graduate student Payton Schwantz led the defense with 11 digs and two aces. Junior Moorea Wood continued to bring energy off the bench as she added seven kills, followed by Lizzie Fleming with six as Duke hit .210 percent for the match.
Miami featured three with double-digit kills, led by Angela Grieve (13), Janet Kalaniuvalu (11) and Janice Leao (10).
Duke started the first set with a 6-4 lead, forcing Miami into its first timeout of the set. The Hurricanes won 11 of the next 16 points to take a 15-11 lead in a set that featured 10 ties. The two squads battled down the later half of the set as the score was tied (24-24), but a Leao kill and an ace gave Miami a 1-0 lead.
Miami's offense was on fully display in the second frame, posting a .517 hitting percentage with 17 kills and just two errors on 29 attempts.
Similar to the first, the third set was a back-and-forth affair with 11 ties. Despite Owokoniran and Fleming's five kills apiece, Miami didn't let up. The Hurricanes hit .424 to close the match and added six blocks.
Miami was led by Grieve offensively while setter Savannah Vach dished 36 assists.
Duke welcomes Florida State Sunday for a 1 p.m., match in Cameron Indoor Stadium on ACCNX.
