DURHAM – The Duke volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision (23-25, 25-19, 19-25, 19-25) to Florida State Sunday afternoon in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
With the setback, the Blue Devils drop to 11-6 (2-4 ACC) while the Seminoles improve to 11-4 (4-2 ACC).
Sunday's contest featured four Blue Devils in double-digit kills and digs, led by junior Gracie Johnson (12 kills, 13 digs) for her fourth double-double of the year, as Duke hit .236 for the match.
Offensively, Duke was led by junior Moorea Wood and senior Ade Owokoniran with 14 kills each as Wood hit an impressive .367 percent with just three errors for a career high in kills. Sophomore Georgia Stavrinides added 12 kills to hit .370 and two blocks. Setter Alex Springate dished a career-high 48 assists as she found six different Blue Devils.
Defensively, libero Mackenzie Cole paced Duke with 19 digs, followed by Johnson (13), senior Payton Schwantz (13) and sophomore Sydney Yap (11). Graduate student Taylor Cole and Johnson each added two aces.
A 5-0 run helped Florida State take a 10-6 lead in the opening set to force Duke into its first timeout of the match. Taylor Cole came off the bench and secured two aces to tie the match (10-10), but four service errors helped the Seminoles to a 1-0 lead.
Owokoniran and Stavrinides combined for eight kills in the second frame as Duke settled into its offense with 15 kills and just two errors to hit .406 percent. Mackenzie Cole, Johnson and Yap each added an ace to help push Duke tie the match at 1-1 heading into the third.
Florida State came out hot in the third to hit .417 with 15 kills and no errors.
Duke led 8-5 in the fourth set before a 10-1 Seminole run put the visitors ahead, 15-9. Duke pulled within four (21-17), but a ninth service error and Khori Louis' 14th kill of the afternoon secured the match for the Seminoles.
"I believe we had our opportunities today and I hope we can learn to better capitalize in the moment on those that are presented," head coach Jolene Nagel said. "There were a lot of balls dug today and it was a battle. Our offense was dispersed nicely as well with many contributors. We are going to continue to work to be more consistent in making the easy plays over and over in order to not give up easy points."
Florida State was led by Louis (14 kills), Morgan Chacon (12) and Emma Clothier (12) as the Seminoles hit .281 for the match. Setter Lily Tessier dished 48 assists.
Duke will be on the road for the next two weekends, beginning with Clemson (Oct. 15) and Georgia Tech (Oct. 17).
