CLEMSON, S.C. - The Duke volleyball team captured a 3-0 sweep (25-20, 25-17, 25-20) Friday evening on the road against Clemson.
With the victory, the Blue Devils improve to 12-6 (3-4 ACC) as the Tigers drop to 11-8 (3-5 ACC).
"[It was] very exciting to see our team get this win on the road," head coach
Jolene Nagel said. "From the beginning of the match, we served tough and stayed steady in our first touches. The team was in the moment both on the court and on the sideline and executed well as a result."
Duke was led by senior
Ade Owokoniran with nine kills as Duke hit .250 percent as a team.
Moorea Wood added eight for a .357 showing while
Gracie Johnson registered seven. Setter
Alex Springate dished 26 assists as she found seven Blue Devils. Defensively,
Payton Schwantz led the team with 12 digs while
Georgia Stavrinides reeled in five blocks. Senior
Mackenzie Cole tallied four aces while Schwantz and
Sydney Yap each added two.
In the opening frame, Duke led 15-13 at the media and after the timeout, Owokoniran came out for back-to-back kills from Springate to lead 17-13, forcing a Tiger timeout. Duke tallied six blocks in the opening frame as Stavrinides and Wood each added two.
Duke jumped out to an early 8-2 lead in the second as Wood tallied four kills early. Duke continued its offensive run to lead 18-9, forcing Clemson into a timeout. Fleming and Owokoniran teamed up for a block to bring up set point as
Taylor Cole registered her 18th ace of the season to give Duke a 2-0 lead heading into the third set.
Duke secured a 10-4 lead in the third before Clemson strung together six of the next seven points (11-10) to pull within one. All tied up at 13, Duke went on an 8-2 run to pull ahead 21-15 as its offense came alive to hit .312 in the final frame. Wood's eighth kill of the evening gave Duke its 12th win of the season.
Clemson was led by Camryn Hannah with seven kills as the Tigers were limited to a .095 hitting percentage for the match.
Duke will travel to Atlanta to take on No. 16 Georgia Tech Sunday at 2 p.m., on RSN.
