DURHAM, N.C. – 149 Duke student-athletes graduated from Duke University and celebrated their accomplishments for the September 2019, December 2019 and May 2020 academic year. Duke honored its student-athletes during the Sunday and Monday virtual ceremonies.
"We are so proud to have such an extraordinary group of students who are joining the ranks of Duke alumni. They have already made a positive difference on our campus and in their communities, and they stand ready to pursue careers of leadership, purpose, and passion," said Duke President Vincent Price. "While we'll have to wait until next year to celebrate them with the Commencement they deserve on the Duke campus, Marking the Moment will serve as a fitting acknowledgment of our pride in their many accomplishments."
While the traditional in-person commencement ceremony has been postponed, graduating students can celebrated via a new interactive digital experience where hundreds of people contributed words of congratulations, advice and encouragement to graduates.
"Duke is an amazing place that I will forever treasure in my heart. Both the school and the people associated with it have provided one of the most enriching experiences I could imagine, and I will be sad to leave." –
Javin DeLaurier, Men's Basketball
"Even though this past season ended early, these past four years have been everything I could have asked for. I still can't believe it went by as fast as it did but I have been so fortunate to have been able to work with such a great group of people. The Duke family is one I'll keep with me for the rest of my life." –
Steven DiLisio, Men's Golf
"To me, Duke has given me a home away from home. Through the rowing team, athletics, and Duke as a whole, I've met some of the most important and influential people in my life. Duke gave me the most amazing four years, all of those of which I would not trade anything for. Even though my time at Duke and our season was cut short, I will always be grateful that I had something to care about so deeply and be a part of. I especially want to thank my coaches, fellow seniors, and friends for making Duke mean so much to me. My time at Duke has taught me resiliency, adversity, how to be a better leader and friend, and most importantly how to speak my voice. For all of these reasons, I am forever grateful to Duke and the people who made it special." –
Grace Garverick, Rowing
"Graduating from Duke will forever be one of the most important milestones in my life. Being a duke student-athlete was not always easy, between hectic schedules, traveling, and finding time to get everything done but all the hard work is what makes it all worthwhile. Duke, it's campus, and the people who fill it will always have a piece of my heart. From freshmen to senior year I was always awestruck by the gothic architecture, cotton candy sunsets, or the school spirit embedded in each student. Duke is truly in a league of its own. I am simply grateful that I got to be part of a tradition so much bigger than myself. Duke true, Duke blue, forever Duke. –
Callie Humphrey, Women's Lacrosse
"It's a great feeling to get a degree from such a prestigious school while developing as a baseball player. It's the culmination of a lot of hard work and great support." –
Matt Mervis, Baseball
"A Duke degree is special to me in so many ways. It has set me up for my future and allowed me to be part of an incredibly close-knit and supportive community. I was fortunate to go on the Athletic Civic Engagement (ACE) trip to South Africa that I would not have otherwise been able to experience without Duke University. The combination of programs offered by Duke University: the ACE trip, an Economics degree, and being part of the Duke Volleyball team, has shaped me personally and inspired my career goal of helping underdeveloped countries become economically stable. I will forever be grateful for and proud to be a member of this supportive and inclusive Duke community." –
Sarah Nelson, Volleyball
"This degree means so much. Receiving my diploma will be a moment that reveals all my hard work and sacrifices paid off! Being a Duke alumnus is something I will always treasure." –
Emily Schubert, Women's Basketball
"Duke has given me so much over the past four years. This degree is more than just a sign of courses taken and information learned. It speaks to the life-long friends I've made, empowering professors I've worked with and incredibly supportive mentors who have been by me at each step of my time here. I will miss having not only teammates, but also staff, constantly nurture and push me. Duke Athletics is a special family and so grateful for how they welcomed me in over the past four years." --
