This Week in Duke Athletics History (April 20-26)

April 20

2001 – Women's Basketball – Duke standout Georgia Schweitzer was selected with the 21st pick in the 2001 WNBA Draft by the Miami Sol. She was later traded on draft day to the Minnesota Lynx.
2003 – Women's Golf – The Duke women's golf team showcased why they are ranked number one in the nation as the Blue Devils turned in a school record round of 277 on the final day to claim their eighth consecutive ACC Championship at the Par 71, 6,358-Yard Salem Glen Country Club in Clemmons, N.C. Overall, Duke finished with four golfers in the top seven and five in the top 12 individually. Liz Janangelo was tied for second (216), while Virada Nirapathpongporn was tied fourth after turning in her second straight round of 71 and finished with a 217. Junior Leigh Anne Hardin carded a season-best 67 on Sunday to finish sixth (221), while senior Kristina Engstrom had a 71 on the final day to finish seventh (223). Sophomore Niloufar Aazam-Zanganeh also recorded a 71 Sunday to place tied 12th (227).
1997 – Women's Golf – With rounds of 293, 309 and 295 for a total of 897, Duke claimed the fifth ACC Championship. The Blue Devils opened with a 17-stroke lead after day one and closed with a 10-stroke victory. Jenny Chuasiriporn won the individual title with rounds of 69, 74 and 69 for a 212. Overall, Duke placed four golfers in the top seven – Amie Lehman (5th), Liz Lepanto (6th) and Alicia Allison (7th).
2003 – Men's Tennis – Duke swept Maryland and Wake Forest to begin the ACC Tournament and capped off its title run with a 4-1 victory over Clemson. Michael Yani was named the ACC Tournament MVP after going 3-0 in singles action without dropping a set. The Blue Devils went undefeated in ACC action with an 8-0 record while winnings its third consecutive conference title.
2019 – Track & Field – Senior Stefani Vukajlovic rewrote her own school record in hammer throw at the Duke Invitational at Morris Williams Stadium. On her fifth throw, Vukajlovic placed second with a mark of 213-1 feet (64.95 meters). Vikajlovic's previous best toss was 205-10 feet (62.73 meet) that she set at the start of the 2019 outdoor season at the High Point VertKlasse Meet. Her performance at the Duke Invitational ranked 10th in the nation and qualified her for the ACC Outdoor Championships.

April 21

2013 – Women's Golf – For the second straight year and the 18th time in school history, the third-ranked Duke women's golf team captured the ACC Championship as the Blue Devils turned in a 54-hole total of 882 to win by 24 strokes at the 6,210-yard, Par 71 Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. Duke posted rounds of 293, 292 and 297 for a 30-over-par ledger, dealing with high winds and very challenging Bermuda greens. As a team, Duke featured four out of the top six on the final leaderboard – Laetitia Beck (2nd), Alejandra Cangrejo (T3rd), Lindy Duncan (T3rd) and Celine Boutier (T6th).
2008 – Women's Golf – In thrilling and record fashion, the top-ranked Duke women's golf team captured its 13th straight ACC Championship as the Blue Devils won by one stroke over 23rd-ranked Virginia, while junior Amanda Blumenherst became the first three-time ACC Champion as she also won the individual title by one stroke at the 6,315-Yard, Par 72 LPGA International Legends Course in Daytona Beach, Fla. In a championship that came down to the final hole to determine the team and individual champion, Duke carded a final round total of 292 and finished the championship with a 54-hole total of 871. Virginia, who led by 10 strokes after day one and was tied with the Blue Devils after the second round, carded a 293 in the final round to finish with an 872. Blumenherst carded a 54-hole ledger of 212 to win the individual crown.
2002 – Women's Golf – For the seventh consecutive year, the Duke women's golf team took home the ACC Championship title with a 29-stroke victory at the Par 72, 6,411 yard Salem Glen Country Club in Clemmons, N.C. Senior Candy Hannemann fired a final round 73 to take individual medalist honors with a three-day total of even par 216. All five Blue Devils finished in the top seven individually with first and second round leaders Virada Nirapathpongporn and Kristina Engstrom finishing the day with a 76 and 79, respectively. Nirapathpongporn finished tied for second with a 217 and now owns a medalist honors and runner-up honors in two years at the ACC Championship. Engstrom finished in tied for fourth place (220). Freshman Niloufar Aazam-Zanganeh finished in sixth place (221) and Leigh Anne Hardin finished in tied for seventh (222).
1985 – Women's Golf – Duke carded rounds of 312, 308 and 292 for a three-day ledger of 912 to win the ACC Championship by three strokes over North Carolina. After being down seven strokes after day one and 11 strokes after the second day, the Blue Devils carded a 292 to win the title. Evelyn Orley won the ACC individual title with rounds of 77, 74 and a 67 for a 218. It marked the second straight team and individual ACC Championship for the Blue Devils.
1991 – Men's Tennis – After edging Wake Forest (5-4) in the first round of the ACC Tournament and defeating Clemson (5-1) in the semifinals, Duke men's tennis won its second ACC Championship with a 5-2 victory over North Carolina. Jason Rubell was selected as the Tournament's MVP while Jay Lapidus earned his first of many league titles as a first-year head coach.
1996 – Men's Tennis – Following wins over Georgia Tech and Florida State, Duke men's tennis won its fourth straight ACC Championship with a 4-1 triumph over North Carolina. With a strong performance in the tournament, Rob Chess earned ACC Tournament MVP honors.
2002 – Men's Lacrosse – Terrence Keaney scored the game-winning goal with 39 seconds remaining and ACC Tournament MVP A.J. Kincel made 15 saves as second-seeded and 12th-ranked Duke captured the 2002 ACC Men's Lacrosse Tournament championship with a 14-13 win over top-seeded and number one-ranked Virginia at Koskinen Stadium. Trailing 13-12 late in the fourth period, Keaney scored on an assist from Kevin Cassese to tie the game with 2:02 remaining. After Cassese won the ensuing face-off, the Blue Devils held possession until Keaney broke free from behind the goal and beat Virginia goalkeeper Tillman Johnson. Duke then won the face-off and maintained possession until turning the ball over with two seconds left. Virginia's desperation length-of-the-field shot was corralled by Kincel wide of the goal.

April 22

2001 – Women's Golf – The top-ranked Duke women's golf team didn't play their best golf at Disney in 2001, but came away with its sixth consecutive ACC Championship with a three-stroke victory over Wake Forest at the Disney Palm Course in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Freshman Virada Nirapathpongporn became the third consecutive Duke freshman to claim individual medalist honors as she finished the three-day tournament with an even par 216. The native of Bangkok, Thailand posted a 69, 71, and 76 to notch her second collegiate victory. The Blue Devils finished the final round with a 307 and turned in a three-day total of 899 to notch the championship. Junior Candy Hannemann turned in a 76 on the final day to finish in fifth for the tournament (225) and senior Kalen Anderson finished tied for sixth posting a 76 during each round this weekend (76-76-76=228).
1984 – Women's Golf – The Duke women's golf program brought home the first of many soon-to-be ACC Championships in 1984. Over the three days at the Duke Golf Club, the Blue Devils carded a 54-hole ledger of 924 to win the title ahead of North Carolina. With NC State adding women's golf, the ACC held its first ACC Championship in the spring of 1984. Duke opened the tournament with a 303 in the first round and led by 10 strokes as Mary Ann Widman Levins carded a 71. With a 72 in round two, the Blue Devils posted a 309 on the second day and held a seven-stroke lead heading into the final round with a 612. Duke signed for a 312 in the final round and won by 12 strokes ahead of North Carolina. It marked the first ACC Championship by a women's sports team at Duke. Widman Levins won the ACC individual crown with a three-day ledger of 224, while Margaret Pierson was fourth and Michele Miller was fifth from the Blue Devils.
1990 – Men's Golf – Jason Widener carded three straight rounds of 2-under par 70 and claimed the 1990 ACC individual title at the Northgreen Golf Club. Widender's 6-under par score of 210 helped Duke finish tied for third as a team.
2017 – Men's Golf – In dominating fashion, Duke claimed its eighth ACC title by rolling to a 12-stroke victory at the Musgrove Mill Golf Club. The Blue Devils shot 14-under par and were led by Alex Smalley at 4-under, who finished finish.
2012 – Women's Tennis – No. 2 Duke won its 17th ACC Championship over North Carolina, 4-2, in Winston-Salem, N.C. The title marked the eighth under head coach Jamie Ashworth.
2001 – Men's Tennis – Duke continued to show its dominance with its four consecutive ACC Championship after cruising through the regular league action with an unblemished record at 8-0. The Blue Devils blanked Maryland in the first round, 5-0, and beat Wake Forest, 4-1, to advance to the final. Duke swept Clemson, 4-0, as Ramsey Smith was named the ACC Tournament MVP for back-to-back seasons.

April 23

2018 – Women's Golf – For the 21st time in school history, the Duke women's golf program won the ACC Championship as the top-seeded and fifth-ranked Blue Devils compiled an impressive 15-under-par, 849, to win by 27 strokes at the 6,122-yard, par 72 Grandover Resort & Conference Center East Course in Greensboro, N.C. Blue Devil senior Leona Maguire won her third ACC Individual crown as she outlasted teammate Jaravee Boonchant in three playoff holes to win the title. The duo birdied the final hole of their rounds on No. 18 to finish in a tie at six-under, 210, and needed three playoff holes to decide the winner in pouring down rain. Duke carded rounds of 282, 281 and 286 over the three days to produce a 15-under-par, 849, to finish 27 strokes ahead of Florida State (876). Duke featured four golfers in the top five of the leaderboard after it was all said and done. Maguire (1st), Boonchant (2nd), sophomore Ana Belac (T3rd) and junior Virginia Elena Carta (T5th).
1995 – Men's Tennis – With a 7-0 win over NC State and a close 4-3 victory against North Carolina, Duke won its third straight ACC Championship with a 5-1 feat over Clemson. Philippe Moggio was named MVP while Jay Lapidus earned his third ACC Coach of the Year award.
2000 – Men's Tennis – Duke finished its conference season with an 8-0 mark before winning the ACC Championship for the third straight year. The Blue Devils swept NC State, 5-0, defeated Virginia, 6-1, and beat North Carolina, 4-1, to take the conference title. Ramsey Smith was awarded the ACC Tournament MVP.
2006 – Men's Tennis – The Blue Devils paved their way to the ACC Tournament Final with wins over Virginia Tech, 4-1, and Florida State, 4-2. After trailing 3-0 early in the championship match, Duke rallied to win its 12th ACC title as Stephen Amritraj clinched the victory with a three-set win on court six. Jonathan Stokke was named ACC Tournament MVP after posting a 3-0 record in singles action.
1995 – Men's Lacrosse – Duke became the first No. 4 seed in ACC Tournament history to capture the conference crown with a commanding 14-6 victory over rival North Carolina. Led Ross Moscatelli, Duke placed five players on the All-Tournament Team with Moscatelli being named the MVP. Sophomore midfielder Jim Gonnella, Scott Harrison, ACC save percentage leader Joe Kirmser and Matt Ogelsby also were recognized. Overall for the tournament, Duke outscored its opponents 31-16.

April 24

1994 – Men's Tennis – Duke cruised to a 7-0 victory over NC State and topped Clemson, 6-1, before claiming the ACC title with a 4-1 win over Georgia Tech. Following a strong performance in the ACC Tournament, Chris Pressley was awarded MVP honors.
2015 – Men's Lacrosse – Duke attackman Case Matheis recorded a career-high four goals to help lead the sixth-ranked Blue Devils to a 13-8 win over No. 1 Notre Dame in the ACC Men's Lacrosse Tournament semifinal at PPL Park, in Chester, Pa. "It's awesome," Matheis said. "This is my first experience actually going to the ACC final. In my first two years we lost in the semis. Those games are turning points in that they were losses. This time we won and it's another turning point in building our confidence and building our team dynamic." Danny Fowler made 12 saves in goal as the Duke defense held Notre Dame to just scoreless droughts of 21:02 and 22:43 in the win. The Blue Devils have won four straight and are allowing just 8.75 goals per game in that stretch. Justin Guterding recorded his ninth career hat trick and Kyle Rowe chipped in a goal to go with his 14 faceoff wins on 19 attempts.

April 25

1993 – Men's Tennis – The '93 squad claimed Duke's third ACC Championship after its second undefeated conference season. The Blue Devils defeated Virginia (5-2), Wake Forest (6-1) and downed North Carolina (5-1) to earn the title. Willy Quest was selected as the MVP.
1999 – Men's Tennis – The Blue Devils opened the ACC tournament with a 4-1 versus NC State before picking up two 4-0 victories over Virginia and Georgia Tech to win Duke's seventh ACC title in nine years. Pedro Escudero was named the ACC Tournament MVP.

April 26

2010 – Men's Basketball – Grant Hill was named the recipient of the Joe Dumars Trophy presented to the 2009-10 NBA Sportsmanship Award winner. Hill then a member of the Phoenix Suns, became the first three-time winner in the award's history (2004-05, 2007-08, 2009-10).
1998 – Men's Tennis – Duke posted its second straight undefeated regular season before notching the program's seven conference championship. The Blue Devils beat NC State and Florida State before picking up a 4-2 victory over Virginia in the final. Dmitry Muzyka was tabbed the ACC Tournament MVP.
2019 – Football – Former Duke quarterback Daniel Jones was selected in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the New York Giants with the sixth overall pick. Jones, a 6-5, 220-pound native of Charlotte, N.C., was the highest Blue Devil draft pick since Mike Junkin went fifth overall to the Cleveland Browns in 1987, and just the seventh Duke player to be selected in the opening round of the draft. Jones was the 14th Duke draft pick by the Giants and the first since Drew Strojny was a seventh round choice in 2004. Jones was also the first Blue Devil quarterback to be chosen in the NFL Draft since Sean Renfree went in the seventh round to the Atlanta Falcons in 2013. A two-year captain and two-time team Most Valuable Player, Jones played in and started 36 career games with the Blue Devils and completed 764 of 1,275 (.599) passes for 8,201 yards with 52 touchdowns and 29 interceptions while rushing 406 times for 1,323 yards and 17 scores.
