CLEMSON, S.C. – The No. 16 Duke rowing team claimed its fourth consecutive Carolina Cup on Saturday morning at Lake Hartwell.
The Blue Devils tallied 99 points, well ahead of Clemson (87) and North Carolina (78), and earned first-place finishes in all five races – the 3V8/4V8, 2V4, V4, 2V8 and V8.
"It's always nice to race to the front of the pack on Lake Hartwell," said Head Coach
Megan Cooke Carcagno. "Our team has been pouring on the effort and intensity recently, so I know today feels good. Now we're back to work to make sure we set ourselves up for our very challenging racing season. Thanks to host Clemson and UNC for the battle of the Carolinas."
Duke opened the morning by sweeping the 3V8/4V8 race, as the 3V8 boat finished with a time of 7:12.91 while the 4V8 clocked a 7:19.7. The next fastest boat in the race was North Carolina's 3V8, which came in at 7:26.26.
The Blue Devils recorded their largest margin of victory in terms of time in the V4 race, as their 7:53.6 finish was over 23 seconds faster than Clemson's 8:16.75 mark. Duke's time also outraced North Carolina by nearly 39 seconds. The 2V4 boat won its race with a time of 7:57.6.
Duke concluded the morning with a strong performance in the V8 race, finishing first with a time of 6:59.1, over 16 seconds faster than second-place Clemson (7:15.59). The Blue Devils also had a dominant showing in the 2V8, where their time of 7:01.5 paced the Tigers (7:14.65) by 13.15 seconds.
"This was a really great team win for us," said senior
Grace Garverick. "All our boats showed up, performed and did what we were supposed to. We've been training hard day in and day out, and it is great to see the result of that. We've made a lot of steps in the right direction, and this was another one of those steps."
The Blue Devils next compete at the Cooper Sprints in Camden, N.J., on Sunday, March 22.
