SOUTH BEND, IND. – Duke junior
Erin Marsh kicked off the ACC Indoor Championships in style on Thursday night, winning gold in the pentathlon with 4,186 points at the Loftus Sports Center.
Marsh took first place in the 60m hurdles, high jump and long jump on the way to becoming Duke's first ACC champion in an indoor event since 2017. Marsh's 4,186 point total ranks second all-time at Duke.
The Buford, Ga., native won the 60m hurdles with a school-record time of 8.29 seconds – surpassing the previous mark of 8.34 seconds recorded in 2016 by Teddi Maslowski. Marsh would go on to tie her personal best in the shot put with a mark of 11.71m (38-5.0 feet) to place second in the event. She finished out the pentathlon with a sixth-place time of 2:22.65 in the 800m.
The Blue Devils also had a strong showing in the men's distance medley relay, as the quartet of
Matt Wisner,
Connor Atkinson,
Matt Politis and
Alex Miley recorded a seasonal-best time 9:49.63 to place fourth. Atkinson clocked a lifetime-best 47.8 in the 400m second leg, before Politis recorded his best collegiate mark with a 1:53.4 time in the 800m third leg. Miley anchored the group by clocking a PR of his own, a 4:05.5 1600m split.
The women's DMR squad – made up of
Leigha Torino,
Lauren Hoffman,
Brittany Aveni and
Michaela Reinhart – also finished fourth with a time of 11:11.96.
The Blue Devils picked up 11 points out of the impressive pentathlon performances, and with the women's DMR collecting five points from their finish, the Duke women are currently in third with 16 team points. The men concluded the first night of competition in seventh place, with five points coming from the DMR placement.
The men's heptathlon got underway on Thursday with four of seven events completed. Junior
Jacob Sobota currently sits in fifth place, thanks in large part to fourth-place marks in both the shot put (12.05m) and high jump (1.81m).
The heptathlon will resume at 11 a.m. to begin Friday's slate. Coverage of the ACC Championships will be on ACC Network Extra, with Shawn Kenney on the play-by-play call and Larry Rawson providing analysis.
