Series History
Duke and William & Mary will meet for the 31st time in program history when the two schools square off in Tuesday's midweek matchup. Duke owns the series advantage at 18-11-1, including a 9-5 record across games in Durham. The contest marks the first meeting between the Blue Devils and Tribe since 2011, where William & Mary came away with a 7-4 victory in Williamsburg. Tuesday's game marks the first career matchup for head coach
Chris Pollard against William & Mary.
Scouting the Tribe
William & Mary entered the 2020 campaign with a mix of experience and youth as 23 players returned from last year's 33-win club. The Tribe returned a core of seven seniors, six juniors and 10 sophomores, while welcoming 10 true freshmen and two transfers. A quartet of seniors earned preseason All-CAA honors for the Tribe, led by reliever Chris Farrell. Catcher Matthew Trehub and outfielder Brandon Raquet, both 2019 All-CAA Third Team honorees, join Farrell on the preseason team, while pitcher Wade Strain was recognized as a preseason honorable mention. Most recently, the Tribe opened their season against East Carolina, falling in all three games of the opening weekend as the Pirates claimed the sweep.
Trending for Duke
After dropping the opening game of the series to Army West Point, Duke bounced back with a pair of wins in the final two games of the weekend to claim its first series victory of the 2020 campaign. The Blue Devils fell behind, 7-1, in game two on Saturday afternoon before mounting a comeback to even the series in walk-off fashion. Duke scored eight runs across the final four innings, highlighted by a grand slam from senior
Matt Mervis en route to the team's first win of the season. The Blue Devils carried their momentum into Sunday's series finale, using dominant pitching and early offense to power to a 7-0 shutout victory. Sophomore
Cooper Stinson provided Duke with an impressive start to pick up the win, while Rothenberg led the offensive output with a team-high two RBI as part of his first long ball of 2020.
Patience is a Virtue
The Blue Devils showed discipline all weekend in their offensive approach, drawing 23 walks and 11 hit-by-pitches for a total of 34 free passes at the plate. Duke's 11 hit-by-pitches rank fourth in the nation and place the team first in the conference. The Blue Devils tallied 21 free passes (15 walks and 6 hit-by-pitches) in Saturday's 9-8 win over Army West Point, as all nine starters registered at least one walk or hit-by-pitch at the dish, while the duo of
Ethan Murray and
Michael Rothenberg drew three walks apiece. Duke owns a .419 on-base percentage after opening weekend, while four of nine starters sport an OBP of .450 or higher.
Duke's Deadly Three-Four Combo
The Duke offense boasts one of the toughest three-four combos in its lineup with three-hole hitter
Michael Rothenberg and cleanup man
Matt Mervis. The two combined for four of the Blue Devils' six extra-base hits and seven of the team's 12 RBI across the weekend as each recorded one double and one home run. Mervis launched his first career grand slam in Saturday's contest, while Rothenberg lifted a two-run shot in Sunday's series finale to clinch the series win over Army West Point. Rothenberg and Mervis both rank within the top 10 of the ACC in on-base percentage, as Rothenberg leads the conference with a .629 OBP and Mervis is tied for ninth with a mark of .600. Additionally, Rothenberg is also tied for third in the league in slugging percentage, as the Duke catcher sits at 1.000 after the first week of the season.
Fresh Faces in New Places
The Blue Devil defense committed three errors on opening weekend, as two of those three errors came from new players in new positions—
Joey Loperfido and
Rudy Maxwell. Loperfido, appearing in his third position in three years, makes the move to the outfield after spending the previous two seasons in the Duke infield, playing first base his freshman campaign and second base his sophomore season. Maxwell, Duke's starting left fielder, makes the move to the outfield after splitting time between catcher and designated hitter across his freshman year.
