DURHAM, N.C. – Following a team vote, the Duke baseball team elected seniors
Chase Cheek and
Matt Mervis as the squad's 2020 captains. In addition, the Blue Devils appointed freshman
Grant Norris, sophomore
Rudy Maxwell and junior
Joey Loperfido to the team's leadership council along with the two captains.
Maxwell, Loperfido and Cheek all served on the team's leadership council a season ago, and have each served in a leadership capacity over the course of their entire careers at Duke.
"Chase has been an elected leader since his freshman year," said Pollard. "He's been on the leadership council the three previous years, and he was elected to those positions by his teammates. Then you insert
Matt Mervis, who was also elected as a captain by his teammates."
The program instituted the leadership council in 2015 in order to take advantage of the team's diverse group of leaders. The concept was originally inspired through conversations with former Blue Devil and current Pittsburgh Pirates Senior Director of Minor League Operations
Larry Broadway.
"It's interesting because we talked as a coaching staff over the fall about how we saw Matt's leadership beginning to emerge," Pollard added. "He had willingness to be more vocal, while taking charge. I'm really proud of Matt and his growth in our program. From day one this fall, he's set a tone with the way he's played and the way he's carried himself. I'm really proud of his growth."
The Blue Devils open the 2020 season Feb. 14-16, hosting Army West Point for a three-game home series.
