DURHAM, N.C. – For the third straight season, Duke University senior
Jade Williams has been named to the Lisa Leslie Award watch list, which was announced Friday by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.
Named after the three-time All-American, 1994 National Player of the Year and Class of 2015 Hall of Famer, the annual award in its fourth year recognizes the top centers in women's NCAA Division I college basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates
Williams, a product of The Colony, Texas, is coming off a season where she averaged 7.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.3 steals as a junior. She collected double-digit scoring in 11 contests, including six out of her last nine games. Williams, a 6-5 forward/center, started 26-of-30 contests and hit a career-best 10 three-pointers.
In early February, the watch list of 20 players for the 2021 Lisa Leslie Award will be narrowed to just 10. In early March, five finalists will be presented to Ms. Leslie and the Hall of Fame's selection committee.
The winner of the 2021 Lisa Leslie Center Award will be presented at on Friday, April 9, 2021, along with the other four members of the Women's Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard Award, the Ann Meyers Drysdale Shooting Guard Award, the Cheryl Miller Small Forward Award and the Katrina McClain Power Forward Award, in addition to the Men's Starting Five.
Over her career, Williams has started 57-of-93 games and was an All-ACC Freshman Team honoree in 2017-18.
Other preseason candidates include Queen Egbo (Baylor), Hannah Gusters (Baylor), Sara Hamson (BYU), Olivia Nelson-Ododa (UConn), Kristin Scott (Iowa State), Ameshya Williams (Jackson State), Ayoka Lee (Kansas State), Shakira Austin (Mississippi), Elissa Cunane (NC State), Kate Cain (Nebraska), Janelle Bailey (UNC), Eleah Parker (Penn), Nancy Mulkey (Rice), Kamilla Cardoso (Syracuse), Antoinette Lewis (South Alabama), Aliyah Boston (South Carolina), Charli Collier (Texas), Ila Lane (UC Santa Barbara) and Elizabeth Kitley (Virginia Tech).
Duke is slated to open the 2020-21 campaign Wednesday, Nov. 25 with a 12 p.m., tip against Longwood in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
