NOTING DUKE
TOURNEY TIME
No. 5 Duke ended the regular season with a split last weekend, falling at No. 10 Boston College, 1-0, and defeating No. 18 Liberty on the road 3-2 in overtime. The ranked matchup against Virginia will be Duke's 16th of the season. The Blue Devils own a 9-6 record against ranked foe this year and are 1-0 at neutral sites.
Since the Oct. 18 loss against Virginia, Duke has only allowed four goals in five games and has shutout the opposition twice in that span. The Blue Devils are 53-28 against ranked foes since 2015. Under the direction of head coach Pam Bustin, Duke is 79-56 when facing ranked teams and is 4-8 in the ACC Championship Tournament since being named head coach in 2011.
CLUTCH CROUSE
Sophomore Leah Crouse came up big against No. 18 Liberty last Sunday, scoring her sixth game-winning goal of the season in overtime to give Duke the 3-2 win against the Flames on the road. Crouse's October was one to remember, as she finished the month totaling six goals, 12 points and three game-winners. The Virginia Beach, Va., native scored her 11th goal of the season against Liberty and is tied for second on the team with Hannah Miller in that category. Her 1.44 points per game ranks sixth in the ACC.
SHUT OUT D
The Duke defense ended the regular season top-five in the nation in two defensive categories, including goals against average (0.99/fifth) and shutouts per game (0.42/fourth). The Blue Devils have registered eight shutouts on the season, matching last year's total. The last time a Duke defense recorded nine shutouts was in 1991, and the all-time record for shutouts in a single season is 11, set back in 1982.
Duke has given up just 20 goals all year and have kept teams at bay in the first half, giving up just six goals all season in the first and second quarters.
FRESHMAN PHENOM
Freshman Hannah Miller has been one Duke's biggest offensive weapons this season, tallying 22 points, good for second most on the squad, and tying for second on the team in goals with 11.
Among qualifying freshman, Miller's 11 goals rank tied for eighth among first years in the nation. Her multiple-goal game against Richmond on Oct. 27 was her fourth multi-goal contest of the season.
FACING THE BEST OF THE BEST
Of the 19 games played this season, Duke has faced 15 nationally ranked opponents, including 10 top-15 teams. Thursday's top-10 matchup against Virginia will be Duke's eighth top-10 game of the year.
ALL AROUND EFFORT
Duke's offense has seen multiple scorers throughout the season, as 11 Blue Devils have found the back of the cage in 2019. The Blue Devils have spread the wealth among each other, as 10 different players have tallied an assist. Crouse and Miller lead the Duke offense with 11 goals, while both Crouse and senior Haley Schleicher are tied for first with four assists.
LIMITING SHOTS = LIMITING GOALS
Opposing teams have been held to 161 shots (8.47 per game) this season, whereas Duke has recorded 255 (13.63 per game) shots thus far. Duke has outscored its opponents, 43-20, for the year and has held the opposition to just five goals in the first half all season.

SCORING FIRST A PROVEN SUCCESS
The Blue Devils are 11-2 on the year when scoring the first goal of the game. The second quarter has been the defense's Achilles heel, as Duke has scored 18 goals of its 43 goals in the second quarter and has held its opposition to just four goals in the second. Duke is also 10-2 when leading after halftime and has outscored its opponents 26-6 in the first half this season.
