NEWTON, Mass. – The No. 5 Duke field hockey team fell to No. 4 Virginia, 2-1, in the ACC Quarterfinals Thursday evening at the Boston College Field Hockey Complex.

Virginia got on the board first, as Rachel Robinson converted a penalty stroke at the 5:04 mark to put the Cavaliers up 1-0. The score was just the third goal given up by the Blue Devils in the first quarter all season. Duke tallied three shots and three corners, and the score remained 1-0 after one.
In the second quarter, freshman Hannah Miller drove a shot to the upper right of the cage, but Virginia goalkeeper Lauren Hausheer came away with the save, keeping the Cavaliers up 1-0. Duke outshot Virginia 2-0 for the quarter and the scored stayed the same at the end of two.
The third quarter opened with five corners for junior Lily Posternak and the Blue Devils within the first five minutes and seven seconds, however, Virginia tallied two saves off seven Duke shots and kept the score at 1-0. At the 38:27 mark of the third, the Cavaliers forced a corner and registered their second goal, as Cato Guesgens put Virginia up 2-0.
Just under three minutes after Virginia's second goal, Duke answered as senior Haley Schleicher connected with the back of the cage courtesy of senior Margaux Paolino and Posternak off a corner. Schleicher hit a line drive to the bottom left corner of the goal, putting Duke within one score of the Cavaliers. The score stayed, 2-1, after three.
After totaling 14 shots in the first three periods, Duke was held without one until the 2:15 mark of the fourth. Schleicher and Paolino each recorded a shot on goal on a corner, but Virginia blocked both attempts. Virginia kept the Blue Devils at bay until the end of regulation.
