DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women's basketball team will head into the Thanksgiving holiday with a three-game winning streak as the Blue Devils took down Davidson, 82-52, Wednesday evening in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Duke (5-2) was led by graduate Haley Gorecki as she collected a game-high 25 points as she hit 7-of-11 field goals and 5-of-8 from three-point land. Gorecki hit all eight of her free throw attempts and has now sank 19 straight attempts. She reached the 20-point mark for the third consecutive contest.
In a tightly contested first quarter, the Blue Devils took a 12-8 lead over the first four minutes, but Davidson stormed back with a 7-0 run to go ahead, 15-12. The Wildcats were able to hold on to a 19-14 lead at the end of the first as Duke missed nine of its last 10 field goal attempts.
Gorecki, who hails from Palatine, Ill., got hot in the second quarter scoring 14 points and Duke outscored Davidson, 26-7, as the Blue Devils would lead 26-7 at the break. The reigning ACC Co-Player of the Week, Gorecki scored 14 second quarter points, including a span of 10 of Duke's 12 during an 18-4 run for Duke. The Blue Devils hit 60.0 percent from the field in the second.
After the first 20 minutes, Gorecki featured 21 points, six rebounds, two assists and one steal, while hitting 6-of-8 field goals and 5-of-6 from downtown. Senior Leaonna Odom added six points and three assists in 16 minutes.
Duke continued its hot shooting in the third quarter draining 72.7 percent from the field and outscored the Wildcats, 22-13, and led 62-39 with 10 minutes remaining. Gorecki hit all four of her free throws and entered the fourth with 25 points and only five points shy of matching her career. Junior Jade Williams connected on her second three-pointer of the contest, which matched a career high and finished the contest with 12 points to tie a season best.
Freshman Azana Baines added 11 points and sophomore Onome Akinbode-James registered her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
For the game, Duke hit 51.7 percent of its field goals and 7-of-15 three-pointers. The Blue Devils held a 44-37 advantage on the boards, while holding a 46-18 lead in the paint.
Over the final three quarters, Duke outscored Davidson, 68-33. The Wildcats (4-3) were led by Cassidy Gould with nine points.
Duke will close a five-game homestand Friday, Nov. 29 at 1 p.m., in Cameron Indoor Stadium as the Blue Devils host Penn live on ACC Network Extra.
