DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women's basketball team built a 21-point lead in the first half against previously undefeated Penn and went on to hold on for a 66-50 victory Friday afternoon in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke improved to 6-2 on the season and closed a five-game homestand.
Senior
Leaonna Odom turned in a season-high 23 points and pulled down a career-high 16 boards to lead the way for the Blue Devils. It marked her 10
th career double-double and first of the season. Graduate
Haley Gorecki added her second double-double of the season with 12 points and tied her career high with 10 assists. She has now scored double-digits in 12 consecutive contests.
After being knotted, 8-8, in the first period, Duke went on a 12-2 run, which was capped by
Miela Goodchild's back-to-back three-pointers. The Blue Devils led 20-11 at the end of the first as Duke hit 57.1 percent from the field, while holding Penn to 4-of-17 field goals and 23.5 percent shooting.
Goodchild, who hails from Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, finished the quarter perfect from the field hitting 4-of-4 field goals and 3-of-3 from downtown, while finishing with 11 points.
Duke continued to increase its lead in the second quarter building off an overall 24-3 run in the game and the Blue Devils led 32-11. Penn went on a little run late in the second hitting five out of its final 10 attempts and Duke led 38-22 at the break.
Goodchild paced the Blue Devils with 11 first half points, while Odom added nine points and a season-high 10 rebounds. Gorecki dished seven assists and scored four points.
Penn came out of the lockerroom in the second half and was able to get back into the game hitting 61.5 percent from the field and outscoring Duke, 22-11, in the third. The Blue Devils had six turnovers in the third quarter and hit only 30.0 percent from the field.
Gorecki came out in the fourth and drained her first three-pointer of the contest to get into double-digit scoring and put the Blue Devils ahead, 52-44, and Duke would close strong for the victory.
The Blue Devils were dominant on the boards holding a 44-28 advantage and held the Quakers to 32.2 percent shooting. Duke also held Penn to a season-low 50 points.
Goodchild finished the contest with 11 points, while sophomore
Onome Akinbode-James added 10 points and eight rebounds.
A product of Lompoc, Calif., Odom hit 8-of-13 field goals and 7-of-11 free throws. She also added two assists in 36 minutes.
Penn (4-1) was led by Kayla Padilla with 15 points.
Duke will hit the road to travel to Lincoln, Neb., for the Big Ten/ACC Challenge Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. (ET). The game will be aired live on the Big Ten Network.
