NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame broke open a tight game in the 65th minute to earn a 1-0 men's soccer victory over No. 21 Duke in a driving rainstorm at Alumni Stadium Friday night. The loss is Duke's first since Sept. 20, stopping a three-game unbeaten streak.
The Blue Devils fall to 6-4-1 overall and to 2-3-0 against league foes. The Irish pick up their first ACC victory to improve to 7-4-1 and 1-4-0 in conference action.
Both teams went back and forth in the opening 45 minutes and shared possession, but neither team was able to really develop a rhythm.
Notre Dame seemingly took the lead in the 14th minute as a header went into the goal, but the Irish tally was whistled off due to a foul earlier in the play.
Duke senior
Suniel Veerakone had a great strike in the 15th minute that nearly put the Blue Devils ahead, but a great save from Duncan Turnbull kept the Blue Devils off the board. A blocked shot from
Daniel Wright bounced out to Veerakone about 20 yards from goal. The Michigan native hit it one time as Turnbull saw it come through at the last minute and dove to his right for the stop.
With neither team able to settle into a true rhythm, senior
Max Moser had an outstanding counterattack in the 39th minute that skipped wide left of the frame. It was Duke's fourth shot for the Blue Devils in a back-and-forth half that remained scoreless after 45 minutes.
Notre Dame led the Blue Devils in shots 9-4 at the half with
Will Pulisic making two saves.
The Irish came out strong in the second half controlling the run of play and defending well as the Blue Devils tried to get into the attack.
Notre Dame took the 1-0 lead in the 65th minute after a foul at midfield by the Blue Devils led to an Irish free kick. The Irish played the ball into the box and Duke was unable to clear the ball out of danger. Jack Lynn was the beneficiary of a header back into the box as he touched the ball past a Blue Devil and fired a shot low into the right corner for the 1-0 lead.
As time continued to tick away on the clock, the Blue Devils pressed forward with pressure on the Irish defense. Duke got better possession in the final third, but was unable to convert its opportunities.
Overall, Notre Dame outshot the Blue Devils 15-6 and had an edge in corner kicks 6-5. Pulisic finished with three saves, while Turnbull made one for the Irish.
Duke stays on the road for a midweek game Tuesday, Oct. 15 at Elon. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
