EARLYSVILLE, Va. – The Duke rowing team concluded its fall season with three top-five finishes, highlighted by the top varsity 4+ capturing a first-place finish.
“Today was a solid day of racing for Duke,” head coach Megan Cooke Carcagno said. “We were all able to take away a lot of information and put ourselves in a good mentality for winter training and how we stack up against some of the ACC and Ivy teams. First, I'm very proud of the win by seniors Lew and Maitland, and fellow teammates Boley, Ruby-Hill and Mendonca. They put together a gutsy race and were able to pass Virginia's A boat in the first half. This is the first time in a long time … possibly ever … that Duke has won this race. It's exciting and we will need to work hard to match that type of speed in our varsity 8. I'm also encouraged by the depth of our team. To have two varsity 8's in the top six and to be able to race four varsity 8's and two freshman 8's shows we are growing as a program and our team's overall speed will be solid.”
The Blue Devils' top V4 boat of Meagan Lew, Lelia Boley, Olivia Mendonca, Katherine Maitland and Isabel Ruby-Hill placed first in a time of 14:34.2, 10 seconds faster than the second place boat of Virginia.
Duke's second V4 also turned in a strong showing with a sixth-place finish with a time of 15:20.0, finishing just behind ACC foes Louisville and Virginia.
In the V8 race, Duke's top boat took third in 13:30.7 in the 21-boat race. The Blue Devils were guided by Lew, Ruby-Hill, Maitland, Boley, Sarah Fletcher, Shannon Tierney, Katherine Lustig, Caitlyn Carlisle and Mendonca.
Duke's top Novice 8+ boat notched a second-place finish in 14:27.7, only trailing Virginia among the 10 competing boats.
“We will need to see our top boat get more speed to stay at the top of the ACC,” Cooke Carcagno said. “Our results show we can find it and be ready this spring to take on the field. Also a big thanks to Kevin Sauer for putting on a great event!”
Duke now enters its winter break session and will return to the water Saturday, March 10 at the Clemson Cup in Clemson, S.C.
