Blue Devils Claim Second-Consecutive Carolina Cup

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Duke rowing team began the spring slate with an impressive performance at the Carolina Cup on Lake Hartwell on the campus of Clemson. The Blue Devils faced off against host Clemson and North Carolina and won all five races on the way to the crown for the second year in a row, claiming the V8, 2V8, 3V8, V4 and 2V4 races.

“Today was a really nice day for our team,” head coach Megan Cooke Carcagno said. “We've trained hard all winter and to start our spring season with open-water wins is a nice way to go into spring break and the season. It gives our team a lot of energy and enthusiasm for the upcoming weeks. We have a lot of work to do and it's great to race these two great and fast competitors but we have more teams coming down the pipeline. Our team is ready to train really hard and be able to be fast at ACCs.”

“I want to thank Clemson for working so hard and putting on this race. It's a lot of work when you host and we definitely noticed how hard they worked to prepare the course.”

Duke totaled 99 points to best the Tar Heels (81) and the Tigers (77).

The Blue Devils kicked off competition this morning by winning the 3V8 in 7:06.3 to outrace North Carolina by over 10 seconds (7:18.9). Duke then took the 2V4 with a time of 7:37.1 to hold off North Carolina (7:59.4) and Clemson's A (8:03.3) and B (8:31.6) boats.

The Blue Devils went on to cross the finish line nearly 12 seconds faster than North Carolina (7:42.5) and Clemson (7:52.1) in the V4, clocking in at 7:30.9.

The second-to-last event brought another victory for Duke in the 2V8, besting Clemson (6:53.2) and North Carolina (6:53.7) in a time of 6:45.6.

The Blue Devils finished the day with a win in the main event, claiming the V8 in 6:33.2, more than 14 seconds before Clemson (6:47.8) and North Carolina (6:51.8).

The Blue Devils will return to competition Saturday, April 7 for a scrimmage against Virginia on Lake Michie.

“We're super excited to host Virginia,” Cooke Carcagno said. “Virginia is the standard for rowing in the ACC so to be able to bring them home with the energy and enthusiasm we've been putting forth this year just couldn't be better. We're really excited to have them come to Lake Michie.”
