DURHAM, N.C. – Following a stellar season-opening performance at the Raleigh Relays, the Duke track & field program will compete in front of the home crowd this weekend, hosting North Carolina and Michigan for the Battle of the Blues April 1-2 at Morris Williams Track & Field Stadium.
“Overall, I think optimism abounds in our program,” head coach Norm Ogilvie said. “We're really looking forward to the team competition this weekend at the Battle of the Blues. Any time there's a home meet at Duke, the kids get extra fired up.”
Kicking off the 2016 outdoor season at the Raleigh Relays this past weekend, Duke combined for 29 top-10 finishes during the two days of competition. Graduate student Shaun Thompson and sophomore Maddy Price highlighted the action on the track for the Blue Devils. Running the first outdoor 10,000 of his career, Thompson clocked a 29:02.18 to place second , the second-fastest time in both Duke history and among NCAA Division I student-athletes this season. Price, also making a collegiate debut in the 100, blazed to an 11.65 in the prelims to set the school record by nearly two-tenths of a second. The Hillsborough, Calif., native encored that performance by taking fourth in the 100 final before placing third in both the 200 and the 4x200 relay.
Also on the track, the men picked up a win in the 4x1500 relay, capped by junior Alec Kunzweiler running a strong anchor leg. For the women, redshirt senior Teddi Maslowski showed her prowess in the hurdles, claiming second in both the 100-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles.
In the field events, Duke added two more victories as sophomores Colt Sessions and Andrew Pancoast placed first and second, respectively, in the men's high jump college competition, and sophomore Madison Heath and senior Megan Clark took the top two spots in the women's pole vault invitational. Redshirt senior Stephen Boals proved his abilities as a complete thrower, placing second and third in the men's shot put and discus, respectively, while returning All-American Thomas Lang finished third in the javelin in his 2016 debut.
With the meet being a three-way scored meet, individual event winners will be awarded five points, followed by three, two and one point for second through fourth place, respectively. In the relay events, a first-place finish will earn five points, while a second-place showing will be worth three points. Each of the three teams is allowed to enter five athletes per event.
The Battle of the Blues will officially begin Friday at 1 p.m. with the women's and men's hammer throw events. The rest of the meet will take place Saturday, starting with field events at 1:30 p.m. and track events at 4 p.m.
The meet will be free for all spectators to attend. For those unable to make it in person, ESPN3 will broadcast the meet live Saturday from 4-8 p.m. Ryan Craig (PxP) and Mark Mueller (Analyst) will be on the call, along with Rebecca Fiorentino reporting from the track.
