BLACKSBURG, Va. – After securing four event victories during the first day of the Virginia Tech Challenge Friday in Blacksburg, Va., the Duke men's and women's track & field teams continued that success with six more wins Saturday.
Duke started the running events in winning fashion as seniors Daniel Moore and William Rooney placed first and second in the men's 5,000. Moore paced the field with a season-best time of 14:36.95, while Rooney crossed as the next finisher at 14:49.74.
The Blue Devils continued its strong distance showing later in the men's 3,000, taking the top three spots in the event. Junior Stephen Shine captured the win with his time of 8:19.47, while senior William Hague (8:25.19) and freshman Stephen Garrett (8:28.77) took second and third. Sophomore Kyle Carrozza finished shortly after, clocking an 8:34.92 to take sixth.
In the relay events, the Duke men secured two more first-place finishes and one second-place performance. Racing in the distance medley relay, Alec Kunzweiler, Michal Filipczak, Dylan Murphy and Blake Udland combined for a winning time of 9:50.66. Kunzweiler registered a 2:59.42 1,200-meter split to get things started, followed by Filipczak's 47.94 on the 400-meter leg. Murphy covered the next 800 meters in 1:52.58 before Udland anchored with a 4:10.73 1,600-meter split.
Moving on to the 4x800, Tommy Meister, Jordan Burton, Sean Kelly and Kyle Francis gave Duke another win with a time of 7:34.83, edging Virginia Tech by less than a second. Anchoring the squad to victory, Francis logged the fastest split for the Blue Devils with a 1:52.22. Duke rounded out the relay events with the 4x400, where Matthew Rodio, Brett Bofinger, Riley Satterfield and Michael Wilson placed second with a time of 3:18.76. Bofinger paced the squad with his 48.12 split on the second leg.
Rounding out the track events with the sprints, the Duke freshman duo of MacKenzie Kerr and India Lowe captured fifth and sixth, respectively, in the women's 200, clocking times of 55.92 and 56.15. In the men's competition, Bofinger paced a group of Blue Devils with his eighth-place showing, crossing the line in 49.14 to rank fourth in program history.
In the field events, Duke picked up wins in both the women's triple jump and women's shot put to bring the second-day total to six event victories. Rookie Domonique Panton picked up her first collegiate win in the triple jump, tying her best mark in a Blue Devil uniform with a leap of 38-11.75 (11.88m).
In the shot put, redshirt junior Urina Harrell tossed the implement 49-9.25 (15.17m), the second-best distance in Duke history. Junior Amarie Bremel and redshirt senior Karli Johonnot placed sixth and seventh, respectively, producing marks of 44-10.75 (13.68m) and 43-8.75 (13.33m) to rank fourth and fifth in the Duke records book.
The Blue Devils added four more top-three finishes, including three second-place performances, in the rest of the field events. Junior Maddie Morrow took second in the women's high jump with a clearance of 5-6.00 (1.68m), while sophomore Madison Heath placed second in the women's pole vault by matching her personal-best clearance of 13-9.75 (4.21m). On the men's side, redshirt senior Stephen Boals finished runner-up in the shot put with a mark of 55-11.25 (17.05m), and freshman Rivers Ridout took third in the high jump with a season-best height of 6-9.75 (2.03m). Senior Carl Heinz also registered a season best in the high jump, clearing 6-8.00 (2.03m) to place fifth.
Capping the field events with the men's triple jump, junior Grant Emrie finished fifth in the event with a distance of 45-6.50 (13.88m). A personal best, the jump also ranks No. 3 all-time in program history.
Duke will resume competition with the ACC Indoor Championships, scheduled for Feb. 25-27 in Boston, Mass.
