GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Atlantic Coast Conference announced Wednesday a list of 43 student-athletes who have been selected for the 2016 Weaver-James-Corrigan Award, including three student-athletes who will receive the Thacker Award. Megan Clark were named Weaver-James-Corrigan Award recipients while
Celine Boutier was an honorary selection.
The Weaver-James-Corrigan and Jim and Pat Thacker postgraduate scholarships are awarded to selected student-athletes who intend to pursue a graduate degree following completion of their undergraduate requirements. Each recipient will receive $5,000 toward his or her graduate education. Those honored have performed with distinction in both the classroom and their respective sport, while demonstrating exemplary conduct in the community.
The Weaver-James-Corrigan Award is named in honor of the late Jim Weaver and Bob James, as well as Gene Corrigan, the first three ACC commissioners.
A three-time All-America, Blazing guided the Blue Devils to a 49-29 ledger in her four years as the team's starting goalkeeper. She concluded an impressive career by leading Duke to the NCAA semifinals for the second time in three seasons in 2015. Also a standout in the classroom, Blazing is a two-time Capital One first team Academic All-America and has twice been selected the ACC Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year. During the fall, she received the Elite 90 Award at the 2015 NCAA Field Hockey Championship Banquet and was named a finalist for the Honda Sport Award.
A key force behind the transformation of Duke football, Brown booked 242 career tackles (108 solo), 23.5 tackles for loss, 4.0 sacks, two interceptions, 15 quarterback pressures, four fumbles recovered, three caused fumbles and five pass breakups while helping the Blue Devils to four consecutive bowl appearances and the 2013 ACC Coastal Division championship. A team captain in 2014, Brown was named to the 2015 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. He was a first team All-ACC pick in 2013 by the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association and a second team choice by the league's head coaches. He is a two-time Academic All-ACC selection and a Capital One Academic All-District III pick in 2013.
An All-America pole vaulter, Clark, who recently set the Duke and ACC indoor record with a clearance of 4.60 meters, was the 2015 ACC Women's Indoor Field Performer of the Year and finished second in the pole vault at the 2015 NCAA Indoor Championships as a junior. Clark also owns the Duke record in the outdoor pole vault, holding a personal-best vault of 4.50 meters. The Fort Benning, Ga., product also excels in the classroom and in the community, regularly appearing on the All-ACC Academic lists and earning an ACC Top Six for Service Award in 2015.
Boutier, a native of Montrouge, France, is a two-time All-America and 2013-14 WGCA National Player of the Year. She helped lead Duke to the 2014 NCAA Championship, which marked the sixth overall NCAA title in school history. Boutier received the Honda Award for women's golf following her squad claiming the NCAA title as a sophomore. A three-time All-ACC selection, while earning ACC Player of the Year in 2014, ACC Freshman of the Year in 2013 and is a two-time All-ACC Academic Team honoree. Boutier was the ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year as a junior for women's golf. She owns three career wins along with 12 top-five, 16 top-10 and 25 top 20 placements over her career. Over the summer of 2015, she won the Ladies' British Open Amateur in Northern Ireland.
The student-athletes will be honored at the annual Cone Health ACC Postgraduate Luncheon hosted by the Nat Greene Kiwanis Club and presented by ESPN on April 13 at the Sheraton Four Seasons Hotel Imperial Ballroom in Greensboro.
