SYRACUSE, N.Y.— Syracuse leading scorer Bo Van Kempen scored on a penalty corner in the 11th minute, and the sixth-ranked Orange held off No. 7 Duke for a 1-0 win in ACC field hockey action Friday evening at J.S. Coyne Field.
The Blue Devils drop to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in ACC play while the Orange (7-2, 1-2) get their first conference win of the year.
How it Happened
- Syracuse grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute as Bo Van Kempen hit the backstop off the trap by Liz Stange and insert from Pati Strunk.
- The Blue Devils earned a penalty corner in the final minute of the first quarter, looking to even the score. Macy Szukics' sweep from the top of the circle was blocked, sending the Orange into the first break with the slight edge.
- Coming up big Duke in the second quarter was goalkeeper Kaiya Chepow with three saves in the period. The sophomore turned away back-to-back shots from a penalty corner early in the second and added a third in the run of play with just under five minutes to play.
- Duke managed only one shot in the second frame with Juliette Schulten being turned away by Syracuse goalie Jesse Eiselin to keep the Orange's shutout effort alive.
- The Blue Devils nearly equalized in the third quarter on their fourth penalty corner of the night. Julia Boehringer pushed Alaina McVeigh's insert to Brynn Crouse on the post. The senior forward was able to get her stick down but sent the redirect just wide of the cage.
- Chepow was solid again in the third, making three saves to give her a career-high five on the night.
- Duke was excellent in the fourth quarter, pressing forward in search of the tying goal. With just under 10 minutes left to play, McVeigh masterfully weaved her way through the Syracuse defense to find an overlapping Ava Cickavage in the penalty circle. Cickavage's backhander skipped just wide of the right post, allowing Syracuse to cling to the 1-0 lead.
- The Orange successfully ran out the clock in the final 4:20 as Duke pulled its goalie in favor of an extra attacker. Syracuse outshot the Blue Devils, 12-6. Both teams finished the night with four penalty corners.
- Eiselin and Tane King both had one save apiece to secure the Orange's fourth shutout of the season.
