HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Duke men's cross country team posted a strong performance at the JMU Invitational Saturday morning, winning the meet convincingly by placing four runners in the top five and all five scoring competitors in the top 10 en route to a combined team score of 22 points. The Blue Devils recorded a perfect 4-0 ledger at the meet with victories over Virginia Military Institute (48), George Mason (62), Longwood (123) and Concord (142). Duke improved to 6-2 on the season.
“It was a good, solid outing,” head coach Norm Ogilvie said. “It's our first meet as a full team so we wanted to make sure we won the meet. The athlete from George Mason took it out hard early and our guys let him go, which was the right move. I don't think we're ready to run quite as fast as he did, but we dominated the front pack. There were two guys from VMI who finished sixth and seventh. They were up there early on and I challenged my top four to get by the two VMI guys and they did that. It was good team running and I'm very proud of what they did.”
In his first collegiate meet this season, junior Blake Udland paced the Blue Devils with a second-place overall finish, crossing the line in a time of 25:08.8. Sophomore Daniel Moore continues to show good form early in the season, acting as Duke's second finisher for the second meet this year after placing third overall in a time of 25:11.7. Duke's top five finishers remained tightly packed as junior William Rooney finished less than a second behind Moore, in a time of 25:12.1, and crossed the line in fourth place overall. Senior Nate McClafferty and junior Henry Farley rounded out the scoring for Duke, placing fifth and eighth, respectively. McClafferty clocked a time of 25:12.5, while Farley remained in Duke's top five for the second meet this season and ran a time of 25:18.4.
In addition to the upperclassmen performing well, the Blue Devils also saw solid outings from underclassmen as freshmen Matt Luppino and Josiah Hanko placed 13th and 14th, respectively. In the first college cross country race of their careers, Luppino recorded a time of 25:31.7, while Hanko covered the distance in a time of 25:33.0.
Duke returns to competition in two weeks, traveling to Charlottesville, Va., for the Panorama Farms Invitational Friday, Sept. 26.
